between hypoglycemia and pre-diabetes for me? I have been hypo-g since a child and diagnosed as such formally as a young adult. I'm no longer young and dr.s are now re-classifying me as pre-D. After a life time of testing and treatments that have clearly said NOT diabetic nor pre-d. [Granted the last test was 3 years ago- a 3-4 hour GTT] All #'s have been disgustingly normal.
What should I 'suggest' to my GP [who is the one that has gotten this notion] that I am NOT pre-D? First off - I gotta have those slow carbs! Those that go to sugars and then back again... Sugar would knock me out flat in no time peaks and valleys....ya know? Second - My DH has type 2 D and We are pretty careful about what we eat, tho not the sprout thing tho - toxin potential too great-in the growing. Balancing the carbs, fibres and protiens carefully. Not to mention the sugars and sodiums... I just want to know how this difference in diagnostic determination has happened? IF this isn't a 'trend' thing, why was Hypo-glycemic a 'trend'? and when did this change? I never got even a grunt from docs until lately... DUH? Anyone with ideas? Thanks in advance - j |

Hypoglycemia was a "trendy" diagnosis, in the late 70's and early 80's. Manypeople..and seemingly mostly women had this "disease" then. The Schering company even made a drug to "treat" it called ProGlycem...which was a total failure.
The only REAL cause of hypoglycemia today is an insulinoma in the pancreas. That is how medicine is. Another example? Well, before Big Pharma decided to push statins on us, the "normal" cholesterol was 220 + your age! Today we have IBS which I think is a blank label. I think something else is going on with IBS patients and the true cause has just not been found yet. Once that happens, then IBS will no longer be the "name". If you go on the net and study insulin resistance you can find some doctors who claim that all people over 40 have a degree of this. Also a deficiency of chromium, may cause poor sugar control. You can try that to see if you feel better. 400mcg of chromium picolinate or 250mcg of chromium polynicotinate

Chromium AND insulin resistance, huh? Guess I gotta do more homework!
I was diagnosed in the very early '70's loong before it was trendy after an 8 hour GTT. Back then a GTT was a real chore, as needles used and the blood taken was much greater. Later, more recent tests were 2-3 hours long and all came out within the 'normal' margins, and I did get copies and look to see if anything was near the super lo's or hi's and nothing close to an issue. So I did what I always do and I READ all that I could find about it all and how to cope. Gimme my carbs when I get lo and I'm OK... go figger. I agree with you about medical 'trends'. It's like foods? Eggs are good for you, then not, then good... then substitute any other foodstuff for eggs and see the cycles. AND the Cholesterol thing? Yep, yep and yep! I am loathe to take one MORE supplement? But Will check it out and see. Thanks with all my - you are one amazing resource! - j |
