Default the headaches

Sorry I forgot to tell you that a bunch of friends that I chat with on the epilepsy chat are starting to get migraines. I wonder if you are to, but I hope and pray you're not.

NO, I didn't listen to her just wondering if anyone else has any info to share about Vimpat?? Hope all of you are doing wonderful!

R.N. here! I thought I was going batty with the headaches. If anyone is a chemist out there--give me what happens when you put VIMPAT and grapefruit togethet. Thanks.

Hi lkawausn,

Welcome to the forum! Vimpat and grapefruit don't go together very good. The enzymes in the grapefruit can mess up the vimpat and many other sz. meds. I know that since I've been on vimpat in Aug. 2010 I found out that grapefruit and grapefruit juice will mess up the vimpat so the drug will not work and it overloads the liver which can cause an overdose for a person and lead to death. It was the same thing for tegretol and trileptal also. I hope I have been of some help and May God Bless You!

I was coming on here to ask about Vimpat! I am taking 50 mg 2x/day (on top of mu other meds) and I can't stay awake! Am I just sleeping through my seizures? I hate this. I feel like a zombie.

Hi Spacedoubt,

Welcome to the forum! I take 200 mg. of vimpat a day and there are days when I feel really tired and other days when I'm wide awake and can't sleep. Vimpat can make a person feel sleepy sometimes and wide awake at other times. If this continues you might want to speak to your pharmacist about this and then speak to your Dr. I take 2 other AED's (seizure meds) along with the vimpat. Here's wishing You well and May God Bless You!

So after surgery. my Epileptologist changed me from Tegretol to Keppra and Lamical which kept me seizure free. I later on my own stopped one med because of cost and stayed with the Keppra. I still take it. The only seizure activity I ever had on Keppra after surgery was a rare aura. No one decreased my meds in the years after surgery, but my present doc suggested it. I am down to half my 2,000 of Keppra and have not even had an aura since I decreased it. I may try to go further. I feel happier too. If I did not have a mirror focus on the other side, I should be able to stop meds completely. My point is that because too much meds can also cause seizures, and because you have had surgery, the focus that was there is not there now. The med is acting on healthy tissue possibly and possibly producing seizures as a result. Are you still seeing your Epileptologist? See about getting off the Tegretol. If it did not help you before surgery, I cannot see why it would after, but I can see it possibly causing them now. Plus, it adds such a fogginess and a dulling cloudiness to daily life.
You are on Vimpat which seems to be a very good med and is made by the same company that makes Keppra. No seizures is your goal. I wrote a paper on Vimpat. The most effective dosage is 400mg. The literature said that they saw no more improvement with doses higher than 400. Good luck with the Vimpat and getting your life going again after surgery. I suggest that you get back in school soon to jump start the neurons that have been under in the influence of meds and seizures for a while. Tattoo
I just wanted to say thanks for the info becaus i am currantly on topamax and vimpat. 125 mlg of topamax and 100mlg of vimpat. I am desperately trying to get off the topamax because i've been noticing alot of the symptoms in me. And lately i've been staying to myself crying hysterical, my teeth r decaying, i'm having complete outbursts, - i just cant deal with it.
My doc wants me on it still but i'm researching myself what would be a great combo with the vimpat- without alot of side effects- like the weight again- depression. I'm going nuts.

Hi amieet,

Welcome to the forum! I've been taking vimpat for almost a yr. now and I was taking topamax but the topamax increased my sz. like crazy and I felt really depressed just like you mentioned. Now I'm taking vimpat along with mysoline and diamox and my sz. have been cut back a lot. I have absence (petit mal) complex partial and aura (simple partial) sz. Since I've been on this combination I only have absence and once in a great while aura sz. The complex partial sz. have happened only a few times and they are nothing like they were before the vimpat. I take 200 mg. of vimpat a day 100 mg in the morning and 100 mg. in the evening.

Tell your Dr. to do a DNA test on you to find out what AED's (seizure meds) will work the best for you with the least side effect.
I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Sue

Default Vimpat alone or with other drugs?

I'm on Vimpat and am doing relatively fine now with just one petite seizure every few months (knock on wood), so I've recently been taken off my second drug, Zonegran to shoot for less side effects. I am undecided whether to stay with just the Vimpat or add a second drug, Clobazam. I've read somewhere that Vimpat shouldn't be taken alone, but I hesitate starting another. Is anyone on ONLY Vimpat that can tell me their experience with it as a single drug therapy?
