Default Trileptal and pure lemon juice..

Hello,

I was to curious to know if the amount of Trileptal within one's body would be affected at all by consuming a large amount of pure unsweetened bitter lemon juice. I know grapefruit juice affects anticonvulsants as well as numerous other meds. The grapefruit can inhibit particular liver enzymes that break down some medications including anticonvulsants...causing either more or less of certain meds. Resulting in either too little of the med or a toxic level of the med.

I understand Trileptal is metabolized by the liver through a different route though. Does this mean that Trileptal wouldn't be affected at all by a large consumption of pure lemon juice?

I don't believe consuming a large amount would result in toxicity as from what I read that Trileptal is metabolized differently.

Any thoughts?

Thank you,

WindWalker

I think you should ask your pharmacist to search this potential.

That is what they are there for.

Hi WindWalker,

Welcome to the forum! Years ago when I took trileptal I was told to drink lemon water because trileptal can cause kidney stones for some people. By drinking the lemon water it helps decrease any kidney problems according to my Epileptologist. Depending on how much lemon you want to have and the dosage of trileptal you take each day you should be okay but to play it safe check with your pharmacist especially if you are taking any other meds including over the counter meds. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

Sue
