Default Keppra 500mg or Lamictal 25mg

Greetings All... My brother is 17 years old and we discovered that he has (Myoclonus) four years ago and since that time he was taking (Depakine/Chrono500 mg) as a treatment. Since that there was no improvement and his jerky movement became more often especially when he get out of bed. The doctors precribed him other medicines (Keppra 500mg or Lamictal 25mg). From your experience do you recommend any doctor or specialized centers in BC area so we can take another opinion. Appreciating your effort and hoping to hear from you soon.

When you say Keppra OR Lamictal, did they give you a choice of the two - or is he prescribed to take both every day?

Sorry in advance for the confusion, I confuse very easily.

Default Keppra 500mg or Lamictal 25mg?

it's either one of them...and both could have worse side effects than Depakine and that's why i'm wondering if we can find some known specialist in British Coloumbia??

That's bizarre that it's either one of them. I don't personally know of anyone, but hopefully someone here will come by soon and be able to help you out.

Best of luck to you, and I think you're right wanting a second opinion.

Hi,
You might want to have your brother see an Epileptologist (epi) at an Epilepsy Center to get the best help. I will let you know that if your brother tries taking keppra he may be very moody and have a hot temper this is one side effect of the drug and my epi wanted me to take it but I refused since I work with a lot of people in public school. Lamictal has helped many people and I tried the drug for my absence and complex partial sz. but I found out I was allergic to the drug after being on it only 4 days. One side effect of lamictal is a bad rash that can cause a persons skin to itch terribly. That's when the person must stop taking the drug. I ask myself is maybe mysoline (primidone) or phenobarbital would help your brother. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

Hi hak,
I've found most Epilepsy Centers are at a University Hospital and the best way for your brother to see an epi is to have his neuro or family Dr. refer him to see an epi. I don't know if there are any Epilepsy Centers in your area so the best thing to do is ask different Drs. Also you might want to have your brother try taking vitamin B12 once a day this also will help reduce the sz. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

FWIW, I am on 3000mg keppra a day (split into two doses) in order to keep my TC seizures under control. That's much greater than 500mg! But it made me crazy moody, so I also have to take lexipro or I'd go off the deep end.... Tried lamictal briefly but was also allergic to it. Rash all over my trunk. Good luck.

Hak, I have been taking Lamictal for 11 yrs. because it controls one kind of sz. for me. Eccept for watching for the rash, which I think if you notice it, simply you have to stop it. People who take it say there's no bad effect, for them. I do get mad easily, but who is to say that is from my Lamictal.

I have dealt with myoclonus for two decades on my own( I am only 30) .... I finally found a OTC item to help... LITHIUM ASPARATE ... I take 10 mg at night ... I took Tranexne (sp?) T tabs when I was formally diagnoised at age 11 but I didnt like the side effects ...
