Default dentist's numbing shots-bad reactions?

I have a vague recollection that I may have had problems with this before. I went to the dentist yesterday for some major mouthwork, so got about three numbing injections into a side of my mouth. Initially there was some heart racing, but I was then fine. Well, last night, I thought I was going to have a panic attack (my partials start out that way), and my head was racing like it was ready to seize. I slept horribly, because my mind was racing so much, and I was still "humming" this morning when I awoke (so ended up getting up early). I have nocturnal seizures, and I recognized the symptoms of being right on the edge.

Yesterday was "post-period", which is supposed to be a stable time for me; in three weeks, I have to go back to have the dental work completed, which will be "pre-period", the most unstable time for my catamenial epilepsy (no puns intended).

Anyone know what I'm talking about and have recommendations? I have another tooth that probably needs to be capped (very old mercury fillings about ready to die; dh wants the mercury out anyway because he thinks those old fillings are doing me in).

Thanks!

Exclamation

I don't have epilepsy but I don't do well with the novacaine injections.

Usually get really sick to my stomach if I have more than a couple. Other problems, too, similar to what you get.

You might want to talk to your dentist and find out about getting some other sedative -- maybe gas??

Novacaine is a central nervous system depressant -- I guess some of us don't tolerate it well.

Good luck with your teeth. I hate my dentist even though SHE is basically a nice person

Been there, done that, got the tee-shirt!

Describe these symptoms to your dentist and ask if you could have anesthetic without epinephrine in it.

The older, non-epinephrine drug was Carbocaine, danged if I know what it is now but my dentist is very well aquainted with it.

Only downside is more shots may be required as the non-epinephrine stuff wears off quicker.

Good luck.

That makes me think...whats the med they give you to put you out for dental work. It makes you feel 'woozy' afterwards (it does both me & my son, who doesn't have E)? I ask because it is the same feeling as some of my sz's.

Hi Footprints,
I would check with your pharmacist to see what med would work the best to help you so you don't have any sz. and there won't be any interactions with your AED's. I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Thanks for the feedback. My dentist's office actually called to see how I was feeling (new dentist-pretty cool!), so I mentioned this to the woman. She said something about carbocaine, too, and said she'd write it on my chart, and to make sure I mention it when I come back for the followup. I certainly will now that I know!! Now I won't be so afraid!

Porkette, I do have xanax as a backup for calming my brain. But I use that when I'm feeling seizury/panicky and my brain is racing, not ever to counter a bad drug reaction, yet (and I had an AWFUL drug reaction in August-accidentally took a strattera-looks just like my lyrica.....my heart started racing and my head was literally all over the place the entire night, but I was too afraid to take anything on top of that! It took 24 hours to get entirely over that reaction, after I absolutely crashed into a deep sleep. Baaaaaaaad!)

After a bad reaction years ago i too always have injection without epinephrine.

30 yrs ago my first seizure occurred when i had a virus and was taking over the counter `Do Do tablets` which contained epinephrine. Told docs they scoffed but reckon i was right.

I no longer need the docs to confirm my hunches, i just follow what my body tells me.
