Default Our daughter

Hello,
This is my first post here, my daughter has a very rare chromosome abnormality and has several developmental issues. This last year on about 6 occasions she has waken in the night, 2 to 4 am, with dizziness and vomiting. This lasts for a few hours or until I give her some anti nausea medication. It has been 3 years since her last EEG and that was done with her screaming the whole time. It showed at the time she had some rare spiking on the left side. She has also developed something where when she is in severe pain, usually due to bowel issues or has a stomach virus just prior to vomiting she will "pass out" go completely limp, make a couple snorting sounds and big intake of air and then come to and be hysterical and then actually vomit. This happens when she is very ill with a virus. Only once did it happen when she was not vomiting and we found out the next day that she had a bowel obstruction so was most likely in a lot of pain. She was just standing there and suddenly dropped to the floor like a rock and got right back up. She does not show pain until its very bad.
So since she has started this early morning sickness stuff and its been some time since her last eeg the neurologist ordered an overnight video eeg. We did that the night before last.
It went well and she slept well that night, she usually doesn't. I did notice that on the computer while awake it showed no flags for seizure but after asleep and during the night the seizure pattern detector flagged more than 20. I guess my question is does any of this sound like she may be having seizure activity. How accurate are those computers for actually flagging seizures? I know I will get a report for the neurologist but a few opinions may go a way to giving my mind a rest as its racing now!
Thanks for any input offered!!!

I am not sure about your question about the EEG-- thats one you'll have to talk to her neuro about.

As for her falls they could be seizures and they could be other things too. There is a seizure type known as a "drop" or atonic seizure-- and during the seizure the person will typically loose all muscle control in part or all of the body, then get back up and resume whatever they were doing... Lasts maybe a few seconds at most and there is no real post ictal time; the person also does not usually loose consciousness during it. So, it could be a seizure; but could be something else entirely--such as a fainting spell, cardiac related or even other neurologic conditions can have this as a symptom. Only a neuro or an EEG would be able to guide you on what it is or could be.

As for the nausea and bowel issues--- a sensation known as "epigastric rising" can be part of a simple partial seizure, however, what you describe does not sound like epi gastric rising. What you describe sounds gastro intenstinal related. The nausea, actual stomache pain, and the fact that it responds to anti nausea meds and relieves her symptoms make me think GI issues. I also deal with a lot of a nausea from time to time which is medication related, and responds to an anti nausea med and not seizure related. If she is on any medications, it is possible the nausea may be from that. I also have, right now, stomache pain without a definitive cause and my doctors and I are in the process of trying to figure out what is going (it is not seizure related)--although I am the one that seems be attempting to be proactive and really figure it out . Stomache pain is not something that should be taken lightly and my suggestion is to start having the doctors investigate that and try to figure out "why" or at least rule out things.

Hang in there and keep in close communication with the doctors....

Hi L2L
Thanks so much for replying.
Our Neuro was thinking it may possibly be related to some kind of night time seizure as its almost always very early morning and Katie is very dizzy at the same time.
Katie has some low muscle tone and low motility. Her chronic severe constipation has been under control during the time these sleep sicknesses have been happening and she has had no real pain from it this last year. But she does still continue to "pass out" during these vomiting spells.
At first I thought she was just picking up virus at school but no one else in the house ever gets sick too and since she is 6 years old and my son 5 there's almost no way he wouldn't get a virus she has. She usually feels better after the anti-nausea meds kick in for a bit too.
She is only on 1 medication for the constipation and has been on it for almost 3 years now with no problems and she has had a complete cardio work up last year because of some possible heart issues related to her chromosome abnormality but her work up was completely normal, Thank God!!
Because of her past history with bowel issues we have regular check ups with her Gastro doctor, she is suspicious that she may have some kind of migraine associated thing going on and so I told that to the Neuro too. Its all so overwhelming and a bit confusing at times. She is so miserable during these times and I feel like things are not moving fast enough to try to solve this for her.
Each time she does this I think if we can just find an answer before it happens again! I'm just feeling frustrated for answers right now and kind of venting I guess.
Thanks for your input I really appreciate it
