Default What AED Should I Take Now

Hi Folks,
This Wednesday I will be seeing my neuros nurse who is able to change my AED's. I've been on diamox and mysoline for yrs. and it worked great but then I started to have clonic sz. along with absence (petit mal), cp and sp sz.and I was put on Keppra this past August to help stop the clonic sz. but it has caused me to have a rapid heart beat, more sz., and it has lowered my red and white blood count along with my platlet level to the point where I'm always exhausted and can hardly stay awake no matter how much sleep I get. My question to all of you is what AED could I take that will help stop all of these different types of sz. I've been on every AED except Felbamate and there's no way I will go on that with the reports from the FDA and what it has done to people. If any of you have any ideas I would greatly appreciate it because I feel like giving up since I've tried surgery and AED's. Thanks for all of your time and help. May God Bless All of You!

Heart Sue

Sue, I am so sorry to hear what you are going with. I am since I change to my neuro about the meds I have been on are Keppra(which you had problems with) and Lamital. They seem to help me instead of what I had been on because I was never to find help from doctor. Back then I was on mysoline, dilatin and meberal which were not that helpful.

I pray than your neuros nurse can help you out. Please keep me up to date. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Darlene

Hi Darlene,
Thanks for your prayers and support. I've taken mysoline for over 30 yrs. and it has helped me very much. I broke out with a rash while on Lamictal, trileptal, and tegretol. I'm glad to hear that keppra has helped you and I hope you live a sz. free life. I will be seeing the nurse tomorrow and let you know what's going on. I also have to find a new neuro since my neuro is retiring.
Wishing only the best. May God Bless You and Be with You!

Default Monitoring

Hi Darlene,
I thought I would let you know that they cut back the keppra 500mg today and I will be going into the hospital around Easter if not before for another veeg and long term monitoring they can't seem to figure out why my sz. have increased so bad when I was doing really well before. I have a feeling it is the keppra that's causing the increase of sz. and I've noticed the more AED's I take the more sz. I have. They might be trying me on some newer AED's if cutting back on the keppra doesn't help. Thanks again for your prayer and support. I wish you only the best and May God Bless You!

Sue,

So sorry to hear of this, but unfortunately as we age, our bodies
do change so therefore the need for the AED(s) adjustments. I,
myself had to undergo through this as bouncing through menopause
including the chemistry and hematology plus the hormones.

Many hugs to you!

Hi Darlene & Southie,
Thanks so much for your support. I have noticed that since they cut back the dosage of my keppra I'm able to sleep better with no more insomnia and I've also seen a drop in sz. so far I've had only one sz. since last Thursday and that could be do to the low pressure here.
It has been proven that keppra can increase sz. for some people so maybe in the long run I won't have to go into the hospital for the veeg over my Easter vacation. I plan on asking them to do a DNA blood test for me. Here's wishing the both of you well and May God Bless You Both!

Keppra certainly did increase seizures for me as
the Epi increased the titration up as well as the
side effects, in addition, on my end - it ended up
being added to the AED allergy list!

Have you consulted with your Doctor about taking
B vitamin along with Keppra, it seems to be so effective
with those taking Keppra; plus the side effects were
reduced. It all depends on your Doctor and your body
tolerance to it; as we are all unique and our reactions
to the medications are so varied.

Here's wishing you all the best of luck!

Hi Southie,
Thanks for the info. regarding vitamin B, I've been taking vitamin B12 for a few yrs. now every day and it has helped but as you mentioned the keppra has increased my sz. but since the cut back I'm not having that many unless there's a low pressure in the weather.
I will be going into the hospital for a veeg starting April 1st and I may be in as long as April 14th it all depends on how many sz. I have. I plan on having a sleep study done also. To be honest I want to get off the keppra and just stay on the diamox and mysoline but I'm concerned that the clonic sz. will start up again. Thanks for your support and time. Wishing you only the best and May God Bless You!
