Default Bean sprouts

I've finally taken to growing my own bean sprouts. We have lots of stir fries (Thai and Chinese food), and we nearly always put sprouts in those. Also, summer's on it's way here so I can grow sprouts for our salads.

I'm using the "el cheapo" growing in a glass jar method, but I can't remember whether to put the sprouts in the light on a window ledge, or whether I should I keep them to sprout in the dark, or less bright area of my kitchen.

Melody? Anyone?

I'll bet you could find something on YouTube about doing your own sprouts. I know Melody has made some videos!

Thanks Twink. I've looked at lots of Mel's videos in the past, but they're hard to find when you don't have the links.

I'll keep looking.

a tv show just did a segment on sprouts this morning..

she said they don't do well if they are too wet or standing in water.
rinse well and tap or shake of as much excess water as you can.

diffused light is OK but not in direct sunlight

Thanks Jo*Mar. I have them tilted so they're constantly draining, but it was the amount of light I wasn't sure about.

You've answered my question, thank you.

Hi everybody. I BOUGHT A LITTLE CAMERA, and took photos of what I've been doing in my kitchen. I turned two bookshelves into two sprout racks and I've been BUSY, as you can see.

Oh, if you want to see my sprout videos, just go to youtube, and where it says SEARCH, just type in ELIZ7212 and all my videos will come up. So here we go!!!! On top of each picture is the desription. Tried to make the text bigger but you can see what I typed, right?

so let's hope my uploading skills have not been lost.

Here are some photos.

This is the first little mini-greenhouse that I built

Closeup of all my sprouts on my mini-greenhouse

This is the bookshelf that I converted into a sprout rack

On my kitchen sink, this is what my trays look like and my jars with seeds that have soaked overnight

Nice closeup of all my broccoli, clover, radish and other sprouts all ready to be harvested

This is what my two bookshelves (turned into sprout racks), look like..with the lamp next to it that I use for greening

Wow...that is really interesting!

How much do you pay for the seeds? Do you mind my asking?

Hi Mrs. D.

Not at all, Are you kidding, you can ask me anything you like. I get most of my seeds from handypantry.com. I get my broccoli seeds from sprouthouse.com because they are much less costly than anyone else. All websites sell organic sprouting seeds. The most popular website is sproutpeople.com. I go on a yahoo sproutpeople message board also.

When I buy my seeds from handypantry.com, I select the 5 lb option. It comes in a can. Costs about $26 and change for the 3 part salad mix that I get. That's broccoli, radish and alfalfa. All organic. I always pop ALL seeds in my freezer to kill any larvae that might be lurking. I have one in my freezer right now. I'll take a photo so you can see. This is so cool. I can actually show you my 5 lb can of seeds.

Some people buy 100 of pounds of seeds (they are survivalists, and they are BIG into storage.

We are all sprouters there and YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE WHAT I'M LEARNING.

I'm glad I was able to share these photos with you guys on this forum.

I also have some photos from the Neuropathy support group that Alan and I went to on Thursday night. I'd like to share these but I don't know where I should post the photos. Can I post them here? There are only 2 photos. We have the meeting in the CBS building in NYC, and they did the movie on pain management. We didn't get a full crew but I wanted people who live in NYC and who have neuropathy, well, I wanted them to see what the room looked like just in case they ever get a notion to drop in.

So if I can't post the photos here, do you know where I might do this?

Be back in a jif and I'll post a pic of my 5 lb can of sprouting seeds.

Melody

Okay!! here are the photos of the seeds from Handy Pantry. I only have a webcam to do this. Not that good. Go to handypantry.com and the other sites and you'll see all the seeds and how they are packed. Interesting stuff. AND ORGANIC!!!

Here's a pic of the 5 lb can of 3 part salad mix

Here's a pic of the 2 1/2 lb package of the same mix. I initially used to purchase this amount but because I EAT SPROUTS, I figured 5 lb is the way to go. cost effective also.
