Default Kitchenaid Mixer newbie

Does anybody have any recipes they would share that are good for use in a KitchenAid stand mixer "newbie"? I tried to do simple brownies, then choc chip cookies ~ they all came out terrible & hard as rocks.

I must be doing something wrong as they were my "Go To" recipes...

thanks-
