Question about pimentos

Hi All.

Just got my computer back and I have QUESTIONS!!! about PIMENTOS!! lol

I love the inside of the olives. I know this is called a pimento. I just learned it's a form of red bell pepper. I bought something by Goya called Fancy Pimientos (thinking it was the same as the inside of the olive). It was not.

The thing inside of the olive
'see this:

This is what I am trying to find in a jar. I want to buy pimentos.
My friend says she has seen this in jars.

I have been to many places many supermarkets and no one knows what I'm talking about.

So do any of you know if there is a product that consists only of the stuffing that is inside the olives? It tastes completely different than red peppers.

Thanks much

Melody

Yes Melodyl...they come in very small glass jars and are chopped. If memory serves me..:o..they are in the olive, pickle aisle..usually up on the top shelf. I use them in a recipe called Texas Caviar.

Okay, so what I'm looking for is a jar called PIMENTOS, that are cut up??. Any particular brand?

And thanks VERY much. I love these and if I can buy them, I absolutely will. They give lots of color to a salad.

This is what they look like:

This explains sweet vs hot pimentos:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pimento

I use fresh red bell peppers in salads (slivered thin or chopped). Fresh has Vit C in it.
You can also bake red bells to soften the flesh, but I'd expect some nutrient loss that way. Roasted red bell peppers are very nice too. When you get the pimento in olives it has been pickled.
I am not sure all jar pimentos are pickled. So read the labels carefully.

Thanks Mrs.D. She definiately wants the ones from the inside of green olives. The ones I buy are no where near that expensive for a 2 oz jar. More later...:D

Melodyl..I bought a 2 oz jar for 79 cents and a four ounce jar for 1.49.
Only problem is, I shop at Meijers, they are Meijers brand and they only have stores in Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. :o Do you have Walmarts? Or Sam's Club? They might carry them also.

pm me your address and I'll mail you a jar.

Alffe: Thanks very much for the kind offer. I'll be near a Whole Foods, the next time Alan has his doc appointment. I know what to look for now.

And I just realized what Mrs. D said: I want them PICKLED.

So I just went to the supermarket and looked around among all the pickles and the olives, and I saw a jar of ANTIPASTO PEPPERS. And they were sliced.

Didn't buy them yet. I still have olives in the house so when I finish my olives (I had bought a 100 oz jar in my local food market for $10.00 and I opened the jar and put them in my lock and locks and oso fresh containers so I have enough olives for MONTHS. I only put 5 or so olives (cut up), in my salads).

I don't go nuts, I just like the taste. But I figured, next time, if I can get the insides, why not go for it.

I just remembered that they sell a cold cut called PICKLE AND PIMENTO LOAF, and we used to call it Olive Loaf (YEARS AGO!!), My goodness, I'm getting old.

Since I don't eat any cold cuts, that's not an option, but after my olives run out, I'll go and get the antipasto peppers. And we'll see if I like them.

And the ones that are in the website that Mrs. D. found, well, when I saw $32.00 I said out loud "For pickled peppers??" Then I noticed it's a pack of 24. lol

HOW MANY PICKLED PEPPERS CAN PETER PIPER PICK??

Or Melody for that matter.

lol lol lol lol

I only put that picture up so you could see what the jar looks like.

I didn't intend for you buy them that way! ;)

Mrs. D.

I just want to clarify something. These DeLallo peppers that are sliced and in the little glass jars, these are the exact same thing that is inside the green olive? I mean, these are pickled?

Oh, guess what I just found on the internet?

http://www.paleotechnics.com/Articles/Pepperoncini.html

It seems I can pickle my own pimentos. They give the recipe for the brine and everything. And since I have all these Mason Jars, well, maybe someday.

I'm not that industrious. I have two book cases in my kitchen, filled to the brim with my lovely fenugreek, radish and broccoli sprouts.

I just made my self the most gorgeous, to die for sprout salad, with little grape tomatoes, just a dash of apple cider vinegar, some sliced olives and some croutons. A splash of extra virgin olive oil, and toss toss toss, AND GO TO HEAVEN.

It really is the best tasting salad one could make?

AND I GROW THIS IN MY KITCHEN??? Imagine walking over to a book shelf in one's kitchen, taking handfuls of various kinds of sprouts, and then creating one's own individual salad.

How cool is this?

Melody

P.S. You'll never guess what I've discovered is the BEST sprouting medium?

I stopped using Mason Jars. Too heavy (I had 25 jars going at one time), and bringing these over to the kitchen sink (even though it's only every 12 hours), well they are HEAVY.

So I did my research, watched videos online, tried using my green sprouting trays that I bought from the various sprouting websites, then I had this marvelous idea. AND I HAD ALL THE EQUIPMENT IN MY HOUSE. Didn't have to buy anything.

I still soak the seeds overnight in the mason jars. then I took my various colanders and poured and rinsed the seeds and set these colanders with little covers over them (kind of like creating mini greenhouses on my shelves).

Now you have to rinse and drain this twice a day. Much easier in colanders than in jars, you just hold the colanders under the running water, and set them to drain on the dish rack.

Since I have 5 colanders I just built my own dish rack. You know when you wash and dry dishes, you have the rack next to the sink. I have this stainless steel rack. I found another one, placed it on top of the one I had, and built myself a double decker dish rack. So I have all these cool places for my colanders to drain.

But the best secret to this sprouting is not the colanders. IT'S THE STEAMERS.

You know those aluminum steamers that fold up like an accordion? Well, I said "why not use this to sprout?" I had this huge one.

I took all my sprouting seeds that had sprouted for 2 days so they were large enough so they wouldn't fall through the holes of the steamer. The steamer has this little holder thing in the middle so I just have to carry it over to the sink.

Well, in 4 or so days there are SPROUTS APLENTY in this divine thing. And guess how I rinse and drain the sprouts? This is the best part.

I simply hold the steamer under the faucet and make sure the sprouts get a good drink.

Then I fold the whole thing back like an accordion and squeeze. All the water drains out, I don't lose any sprouts, I hold this for 3 or 4 seconds. I then unfold the steamer and this bumper crop of sprouts are staring me in the face.

THIS IS THE BEST THING I HAVE DISCOVERED.

I now have 3 steamer things on my shelves growing HUGE amounts of sprouts.

And my fenugreek, well, I sprout these in my salad spinners.

So...no more mason jars, no more heavy lifting over to the sink, no more waiting for sprouts to drain. I simply rinse and close up the accordion steamer thing, or, if I'm doing fenugreek, because they are already sprouting in the salad spinner, I simply put water in, spin the fenugreek one time, pick up the inside basket, with the nice plump fenugreek all colorful and everything, and I drain the outside part of the salad spinner, and re-insert the basket and VOILA!!! I have fenugreek.

so try to imagine my book case. It has accordion like steamer thingees filled with sprouts, and two salad spinners filled with fenugreek. I ADORE FENUGREEK, and it's great for digestion and diabetes.

Just wanted to share.

Melody
