Undiagnosed paralysis nystagmus uncontrolled crying?
Hello, new here, posting hoping to get some leads for my husband. Last October after a week of the stomach flu, he developed rapid paralysis from feet upwards both sides, which progressed to just above waist, had to use catheter, laxatives, wheelchair for a month. Initial diagnosis Guillain Barre syndrome, he slowly recovered but still experienced "flare ups" of numbness and urinary problems which are now occuring every 3 weeks. Also now has rotary nystagmus in both eyes. Further testing (spinal tap, multiple mris of brain and spine, bloodwork, and nerve conduction testing) has ruled out Guillain barre and MS. We moved on to PT to build up strength, after a traction session (which he had had before) when he had bouts of uncontrollable crying 2-5 minutes in length, preceded by numbness and tingling from feet up. Went to ER where they occured every 15 min, then 30, then 90, and stopped. Was assessed for stroke, had another mri of thoracic spine, all normal, and sent home.
Has appointment out of town with neuro opthalmoligist for nystagmus, and 2 appts. next week with our neuro and eye doc. We have tested for lymes disease, syphillis, along with lots of other offbeat diseases with no luck. Before this was a healthy 56 year old male. Any ideas of what could cause lower limb weakness, nystagmus, and the crying thing would be greatly appreciated. We are researching before our next appt. with the neuro, thanks! Multiple mris of brain and spine show no lesions or abnormalities, and all bloodwork and labs and spinal tap was nornal. Thanks! Snows.
