I went to my dr yesterday, It is a chiari malformation... it is just a different name for a brain herniation, or cerebellar tonsillar ectopia, have found out that most of the time you are born with it and it is not symptomatic, however, having a car accident, or "whiplash" or an injury to the spine can bring on the symptoms.... this is apparently where most of my pain is coming from, and most drs are not familiar with it... When you have one of these, if you look at your mri from the side veiw and draw an imaginary line at the bottom of your brain and cross over the spinal column, there should be no part of your brain that goes down into where your spinal cord goes... It is the back part and if you look at my images you can see that the back part of my brain or "cerebelum" decends down into the spinal column... This is also made worse by epidural steroid injections if they hit your cord, b/c the leak of csf (cerebral spinal fluid) causes it to be pulled down further by the change in csf flow.... Thus causing more painful symptoms.... So I finally got my answer, dont know happy I am with it! But thanks everyone for trying to help me get to it!

you need a special mri, which checks for csf flow. check out the Chiari forum here at NT. anywhere near Long Island? there is a good Chiari center there.

it says herniation on my report... it is basically a brain herniation of the cerebellum... I need to know if this was caused from my bad cervical steroid epidural... Ive been finding info that says this can happen, but I need to know how to find out if that is what caused it so my new dr can know how to treat me...

I also saw someone ask if I was near long island.... No Im not, Im in MD... So not too far, my husband is actually from NY...Staten Island...So Im sure I could make an apt and when we visit his family go there to see a Dr.... Do you know the name of the Dr???
