I havent bothered my GP with this because im thinking its a bit daft but i found this website and thought i would ask the question.....
Im a 34yr old female, non drinker, non smoker, fit and healthy. Just recently i have been experiencing a strange short term memory loss, it occurs more with conversations i've had. I know i've had them but they feel like dreams and i can't pinpoint when or to who i had the conversation with, all i know is is the conversation only occured a few hours before. I also find that im forgetting how to spell simple words, words that i spell everyday yet all of a sudden its gone and i stare blankly at my piece of paper or computer screen racking my brains for a word that i know but forgotton!! I feel i should mention this, i have two retinal tears, one in each eye that are being repaired next week. I cant imagine why this would be relevant but thought i should mention it Any ideas?? |

Are you taking any medications? Some meds can affect memory.
Stress can also make some people a little flakey, that happens to me sometimes. What you are describing sounds like mild dissociation, it happens to lots of people and last I read they think there is genetic variation in the tendency. Have you ever driven a long distance and been daydreaming and realized you had covered some miles but dont exactly remember that in the same way? I'm not sure I explained that in quite right but it is the same phenomena. I hope the retina repair gows well, I wouln't worry too much about the memory issue right now. Just keep an eye on it and see how you do over time. judi |

I do think your doctor should run more tests or send you to a Neurologist to see what's going on here. Short-term memory loss or not being able to remember how to spell, are symptoms of other problems. AND it could be any medications too, but you need to find out for sure from someone who would know.
Ask for a referral to a neurologist so you feel better about it. God bless and take care! Hugs, Lee

Hi Cornucopia,
Welcome to NT! ![]() You mise well have been describing ME! I've been told a few different things, but the one that I believe the most (in 'my' case) is regarding my anxiety/depression. Plus I try to wear too many hats between my job, twin boys graduating highschool this year, caring for my grandson.... My psychiatrist is pretty sure it is due to the depression. You probably don't battle depression, so this of course wouldn't pertain in your case......maybe the 'wearing too many hats' might be tho? I take meds and am fairly certain that this, in part, has to due with my short-term memory. Other 'well meaning' people might try to say that it is due to aging, which could, I guess, to some extent in SOME people. Certainly mention this to your doctor. If this is something that is bothering you, then it IS important! Just some things I thought I'd throw out there ![]() I hope you are doing ok with your eyes? Caring, Rae ![]() |

Hi Cornucopia,
Have you suffered any head trauma recently? If so please join us in the Traumatic brain injury dept for more info. Im asking because of the torn retinas and memory issues, being very typical of post collision or an accident. Good luck. |
