Default swollen feet

My feet are always swollen at bedtime. My blood pressure is really good (120/80). I am a diabetic; not controlling it very good at all tho. I do some housework; but I'm not on my feet alot. I have gained about 15-20# this winter. Any thoughts or suggestions? I don't see my Dr until about 2 weeks. Thank you for any help.

Hi Jaycojade, welcome.

Is it edema? With diabetics, this can be a warning sign, or early stage, of the onset of peripheral neuropathy, foot ulcers, peripheral artery disease (PAD), and more.

Is it Diabetes 1 or 2, and how is it that you're not controlling it well—diet & exercise or medication/insulin or what?

Your doctor can prescribe a diuretic (water pill) along with potassium (which water pills deplete quickly), and some people try diabetic socks or compression socks/stockings. I've heard mixed reviews by people on whether these things work or not. IMO the best way to get the swelling down is to find the food triggers that are causing it—they could be almost anything, from dairy to sugar to white starches (rice, potatos, flour, etc.)—and avoid them.

I can only encourage and urge you to do what you can NOW (i.e. TODAY—not next week or after you see your doctor) to take care of yourself before things get worse. It's not too late, but it doesn't take long to progress to those other conditions.

Here are links to the Diabetes / Insulin Resistance / Metabolic Syndrome and Peripheral Neuropathy forums. The folks there can help you with more information, encouragement/support, experience, and wisdom.

Hello Jaycojade,

There can be some different causes for swelling (edema). those causes can include:

- Too much salt/sodium in your diet
- Inactivity -- it's important to exercise even moderately
- Weight gain
- Not drinking enough water. Average amount is 64 oz but some people require more water to keep edema from happening. (I drink between 80 & 100oz of water a day).
- Some medications can cause edema
- other health conditions such as pulmonary problems as well as others

It's time to take you health seriously and make changes

I just had some arthritic foot/ankle swelling on the GOOD side of my body..long story I deal with arthritis and right side got more messed up with hip replacement.

Anyway, this foot/ankle swelling has been coming on for a week or so and the last couple nights I took 600mg Grape Seed Extract (Olympian Labs) and the edema and pain is gone...I've done this two nights now. And it's amazing.

I've been working with Grape Seed Extract for 20some yrs but learning more and more about take more and extra strength dosing.

If you take pharma blood thinners then can't take both. I swear by grape seed extaract.
