Red face New on here, pregnant and I think it's hemiplegic migraine

Hi everyone. I haven't been diagnosed yet with hemiplegic migraines, but it makes the most sence. I have been getting my "episodes" since I was about 10 years old, maybe younger I don't really remember. I have had a few early head tramas like falling off a bike and being pushed into a wooden beam.
Sometimes, not always, I get this vision like looking underwater followed by an aura. I loose my ability to talk straight and parts/all of my left arm and leg go numb. I just found out about hemiplegic migraines, and I am a little relived. It beats having the paramedic say it's only an anxiety attack, which I've thought it was for the longest times now. Or thinking your crazy and it's all in your head.
I am 5 months pregnant and have had 2 attacks in the past month. My last one was just on Sunday, ruined our trip to the fair just as we got in. I am so afraid that the remaining tingly feeling in my fingers is the start of another, or the tightness in my neck. I am driving myself and my partner crazy. If anyone has any tips or advice, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ymelissa1fish

I am sorry to read about your possible hemiplegic migraines.

I suggest that you see your GP - s/he will be able to arrange for a full clinical investigation, which could involve a specialist neurologist.

Depending on the results of that, your GP/the neurologist might recommend medication - anticonvulsants, calcium channel blockers and triptans can help people who have hemiplegic migraines.

All the best.

thank you for your response. Do you have this or somthing similar? I am working with my Gyno due to ins to see if any neurologists are available. Going in to get a confirmation would help. Treatment may be prolonged due to baby but as long as I know what it is and how to prevent/limit more... I feel more numbness in my fingers and toes than I remember from last time, if you do get these are you familiar with lingering numbness/tingles?

Hi Ymelissa1fish

I don't get migraines and have never been pregnant (I am male).

I drew on my experience of supporting my partner in making those suggestions. She does get migraines so I did a bit of research so I could translate what her neurologist told her into lay terms - I am a biomedical scientist/teacher.

She has found a calcium channel blocker very effective for her migraines.

I hope that things improve for you soon.

Thanks. she is very fortunate to have a partner that understands. My guy tries but it's confusing to me and I'm going through it. What is your wife going through?

Migraines tend to become more common in pregnancy. Starting in the mid-trimester, blood pressure changes radically--goes down--as part of the process.

I don't normally have migraines, but I had my first one in my 5th month of pregnancy. This was my first and only one in my life.

You need to discuss this with your OB... calcium channel blockers would not be really safe during this time of low blood pressures, IMO. When I had mine, no medications were authorized but I did have a CocaCola, which did help. Ask your OB if you can have a little caffeine. That is the most benign thing I would think. However, OBs limit caffeine for their pregnant patients most of the time.

Your post today on this same forum is essentially a duplicate of this one. I've removed it.

I wish this was only pregnancy related, but it has been going on for years. I can't have caffeine. One day maybe I will figure what is wrong. Until then, I have you folks to try and keep me sane

Well there is always an ice pack on the back of your neck. That might help a little. Don't overdo it... 20minutes tops per session.
