Question question about cancer and heredity

Hello,
I have a general question that maybe someone here can answer. I know that cancer is hereditary. But I'm wondering if different types of cancer show up in different generations? For example, my grandmother died from melanoma. Her daughter (my aunt died) from lung cancer. Both are cancers, yet they're so vastly different (cause, severity, etc.) Is there a connection at all?

Thanks so much.

Certain types of cancer do seem to run in families but when referring to cancer and genetic links, it usually means the same type of cancer.

Breast, ovarian, prostate, and colon cancers are some that you'll often see emerge in more than one family member. This article explains the genetic side rather well.

The following two articles discuss the types that may be genetically linked and although melanoma is on the list, I couldn't find lung cancer mentioned at all.

I hope you find the information useful in answering the questions that you have.
