Gulf War Syndrome
Whilst studying Neurotoxicology, I came across the section regarding the toxicity of insecticides. One aspect concerned ORGANOPHOSPHATES. a very nasty insecticide derived from SARIN.
Organophosphates were used in sheep dips, and there were reports of shepherds becoming ill from neuro problems. These chemicals were mentioned in newspaper reports when describing the conditions in the desert in Iraq. The chemicals were liberally sprayed on equipment to deter the local bugs.
This created a problem since the equipment had to be handled. and organophosphates can be absorbed through the skin. Another nasty effect of this chemical was the delayed onset, this meant that some could have finished their tour of duty and were safe in their home barracks before becoming ill.
Since there was nothing to cause problems in that locality, there was no concern. Most drug induced abnormalities are subclinical so there were no signs for the medics to see. The troops had had many injections prior to the event so any research looked in that direction. It seems that no-one looked at the field conditions and the anti-bug sprays used. Those soldiers were really ill and no Doctor could see it --even more so when it came to compensation.
