Default Just so everyone here knows--

--the New York times has been running a series of articles on celiac in which they have a question and answer forum with a Dr. Crowe.

While I appreciate the fact that the Times is trying to bring out more info on this, given how underdiagnosed gluten problems have tended to be, I've made several posts there taking issue with some of the answers Dr. Crowe has given, as they often seem very much "party line" and some years out of date--for instance, she has said that people with celiac only have either HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8 genetic serotyping. She indicates the anti-tranglutaminase IgA as really the only test that needs to be done serologically. She has also said that one should not go gluten-free without definite evidence of celiac, due to the likelihood of nutrional problems; I've had to point out three times that there is no nutrient in a gluten-containing grain that cannot be obtained from non-gluten sources, and many of those are probably overall healthier anyway, given our problems with blood sugar and metabolic syndrome.

I have also several times referred the readers to The Gluten File and told them to not particularly the work of Drs. Fine, Alessio, and Hadjivassiliou. Certainly, if one gets to the File, one can also see the work of Latov's group and others on noon-gastric manifestations of gluten intolerance.

Thanks for the heads up, Glenn. It is a very interesting set of blogs and comments. I am impressed by the quality of responses... so often people turn to emotional responses rather than educational ones. I think the story of casein sensitivity has been set straight. I wonder if somebody in particular got the message .
