Default Withdrawal Symptoms

My 14 y/o daughter has been sick for several years. She is very athletic, in great physical shape but catches every bug out there. This year the stomach pains started and never went away. ER trip after playing catcher left her not being able to breathe. Finally have a celiac test come back positive. We started the gluten free diet about 1 week ago and she is suffering from severe headaches, blurred vision, joint and muscle aches, fatigue etc. Are these symptoms normal when going off of gluten? Should I be tempering off the gluten instead of having her go cold turkey? Any advice would be appreciated!!

Are there any new foods you have added to her diet to supplement the removal of wheat/gluten? Multiple food sensitivities are not uncommon in people with Celiac. In fact, Celiac has been linked with several auto-immune dysfunctions. I'm not surprised to hear she had a weak immune system and caught a lot of bugs. Check out the Gluten File link that is posted as a sticky at the top of the Gluten Sensitivity forum list. There's a lot of good info in there.

indeed, SAman is on target. May have more than on sensitivity, esp. including milk. And her response sounds like classic opiate withdrawal,
which is the same sort of thing as some person get when withdrawing from gluten.....symptom management is the way to go. Now, you also need to check all personal care products, check for cross contamination (commonly referred to as "CC") and get some new cook ware, toaster etc. good luck

I had no idea that personal care products would also have gluten in them - so would the gluten be absorbed thru the body??

Does this mean that people can pass gluten by touch if they are using products with gluten? Very new to all of this, just having discovered a gluten sensitivity, among other sensitivities. Thx.

Some people are extremely sensitive to gluten. Some not as much. One must be careful there is gluten hidden in so many things. Kroger chicken has 10% weight in "broth." The broth contains gluten (at least it did when we last checked.)

Many people with celiac have "leaky gut" which means they may react to dairy like to an opiate.

Here is a good site about gluten and caeliac. The Gluten File www.theglutenfile.com
