I'm glad Cara responded. Tom was DF, and we figured out rice triggered seizures before we went GF. I found very little commercially prepared bread meeting those requirements at our local stores. The one I did find was kind of styrofoamy. So.... I found a recipe that Tom would eat, and made lots of it. At this point in time, we're pretty much eating whole foods and not having bread at all. I have a couple of pizza crust mixes on hand for when the kids are invited to a birthday party or have a school party so they can participate. I also have a potato bread bread mix from Miss Robens (http://www.missroben.com/) that I've made once or twice.
If you're interested, I bought "Special Diets for Special Kids" I and II by Lisa Lewis. I'm not sure if I'd recommend you buy them. But, our library has them. She has a lot of kid friendly recipes (and that's where I found our little sandwich bread recipe that I used to make), chicken nuggets, meatloaf, meatballs, etc. The problem is that the first book has no index, and the second has a very poor index. If you don't know where the recipe is, you're going to search for it. Very annoying. But, all the recipes are GF/CF. She does have one or two ghee recipes, and I use olive oil instead. We're avoiding *all* dairy, not just casein. She also has suggestions if you're avoiding eggs or other common allergens. (My signature isn't up to date here. We're also avoiding eggs, tomatoes, nuts, peas, soy, pepper and probably one or two other things.) Anyway, I would definitely check out your library's collection. Just remember to put a yellow sticky or note the page number on any appealing recipes, if you find these books. Oh, and you can go to Amazon.com and view the table of contents. And on the picky eater note... GF definitely improved Tom's eating. He used to gag and/or throw up his meal over any food he didn't like. He's never been "failure to thrive," but he's always been close to it. Anyway, since going GF, all the gagging is gone and he will eat foods he doesn't like in exchange for a bite of those he does. He's eating green beans, spinach, artichokes, broccolli, squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, kale, chard... all in exchange for whatever meat we're having. Life is so much better.

You've started a discussion on GFAB...
Is it Rice Dream Supreme?

ok, it just so happens that hubby picked up a box of Rice Dream for me on his way home tonight... I asked him for Rice Dream Vanilla flavor... he got Rice Dream Vanilla Heart Wise It says "can help lower cholesterol" on it... this is not what I bought before, but he said it was the only vanilla they had in stock so he got it. I have not opened it yet, luckily.. because on this one, it does NOT say Gluten-free, and I do see under the ingredients, it does have the note "Contains gluten from barley protein at less than 0.02%". So the Heart Wise variety is definitely NOT Gluten-free. Luckily I didn't care about that, it's just what hubby happened to pick up.
Now, the other box I currently have (does not say Supreme on it).... it says Rice Dream Rice Drink, Original flavor, Enriched. The other box was Vanilla (regular, not Heart Wise), but I already threw the empty box away. Both of these 2 boxes said Gluten Free on them, and did not have the 0.02% gluten message like the Heart Wise stuff did. So it looks to me like the regular ones (not Health Wise) are gluten free. The ones that SAY "gluten free" look like they indeed are. I will call to check though. I tried to post this also on that other board but I have to get approved first so I'll do that later. The one on the left appears safe, and the vanilla flavored one (regular, not Heart Wise) as well. BUT, the Heart Wise one on the right is NOT Gluten free. Dawn

oh, ok.. I thought I'd get an email when I was approved but didn't. Thanks!
edit: It still won't let me post. When I log in, it says: "You have specified an incorrect or inactive username, or an invalid password." The password is right so I guess I'm inactive.

I can see I will have fun in Woodman's tomorrow reading all the boxes of Rice Dream! I'll set aside an extra 30 minutes for grocery shopping, and START there so my other food doesn't melt.
Again, this is the complex part of the diet...trying to figure out what processed foods are ok and which aren't! I remember buying, throwing away, buying, throwing away...later finding out it was really ok... or worse yet, that we ate something that wasn't! Cara

That is a mighty big selection of Kinnickinnic!! The donuts are also good, and we pick them up maybe twice a year. I buy the frozen white sandwich bread, pizza crusts, and bagels every few weeks. I've also purchased the Montina Chocolate Chip cookies and Double Chocolate cookies... both good. We use Contadina Pizza sauce and hormel pepperoni and usually do without cheese. There is a newer gf/cf cheese out, at least I have not yet seen it in my stores carrying other Galaxy products. I bet your new store might just have this... most of the alternative cheese I've had so far is just so-so, but my daughter likes to think she is having some cheese. I have not tried it yet, but am hoping to find it soon. http://www.galaxyfoods.com/ourbrands/usa/vegan.asp Cara
