Default Food Study: oregano

DO NOT USE OREGANO OIL AT FULL STRENGTH!! Please see post #8. I also had a friend use it on her face and said it was quite painful. Essential oils are to be used only with caution. Their fumes, alone, are enough to cause major damage in cats.

Another aspect of the study examined the efficacy of oregano oil and carvacrol, which is believed to be the major antibacterial component of oregano, in 18 mice infected with the staph bacteria
Six of the mice received oregano oil for 30 days, and 50% of this group survived the 30-day treatment. Six received the carvacrol in olive oil, not oregano oil, and none survived longer than 21 days. Six mice received olive oil alone with no active agents (the control group) and all died within three days. A repeat study corroborated these findings, which demonstrates that there are components of oregano oil other than carvacrol that have antibiotic properties.

Oil of Oregano is an anti-bacterial. Taken internally, it can destroy the yeast associated with candida. It can also destroy the the beneficial bacterial flora that our bodies need for digestion. For this reason, friendly bacteria (not lacto bidofilus) should start being taken after two weeks of use and both continued for 3-4 weeks. If an ulcer is present it can cause stomach upset. Caution should be used with this oil, however, it can be of great benefit if used wisely. –Star02

Check out the customer reviews. They cover yeast resolution through to eczema resolution in 4 days.

I'd be rather careful with herbal oils though... they can burn your skin too...

The same researchers also tested oregano oil's effects on mice who had been injected with the yeast Candida albicans. In the study, published last year in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, all six of the mice fed oregano oil survived more than 30 days with no sign of Candida infection, while all six mice that were fed just olive oil died within seven days.

A small study published in Phytotherapy Research in 2000 examined the effects of oregano oil on n adults with the intestinal parasite Blastocystis hominis, which can cause diarrhea, **** itching, and weight loss. Participants took 600 mg of oregano oil daily for six weeks. Eight were completely free of the parasite, and the remaining three participants had a reduction in symptoms.

To treat bacterial and fungal infections that occur in other parts of your body, place I drop of the pure oil under your tongue twice a day, suggests Brett.
For fungal infections on your skin and nails, dilute I teaspoon oregano oil in 2 teaspoons olive oil and apply with a cotton swab to the affected area up to three times a day, she says.
Oregano oil is potent, so you should not exceed these doses. Also, discontinue use within three weeks, Brett advises.

Sorry for the bad copy... it's a PDF and I'm using a free Foxit version.

Bottom line: for staph (which quite a few of us get if we've been glutened) oregano water or tea can be effective in helping to clear it. Please see bolding that compares efficacy of water to tea.

Abstract
The amtimicrobial effect of oregano tea (1/10, w/v, in distilled water), commercial oregano water, and ½
oregano water (1/1, commercial oregano water/distilled water, v/v) against Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria
o
monocytogenes 4b, Staphylococcus aureus and Yersinia enterocolitica 03 after direct contact at 20 ±2 C for 1,
10, 30, and 60 min were comparatively evaluated. The Plate Count Agar was used for colony counts and the
content of each treatment tube was enriched in Brain Heart Infusion broth after the 60 min direct contact period.
All the four pathogens in oregano water and ½ oregano water decreased to uncountable level (1 CFU/ml) in one
min. No growth has also occured in enrichments. Oregano tea was less effective than the oregano waters after 1
min, but counts of E. coli O157:H7, L. monocytogenes 4b, S. aureus and Y. enterocolitica 03 decrease to
uncountable level after 60, 60, 10, and 10 min treatment periods, respectively.
All the four test pathogens
demonstrated grow ability in enrichment broth after a 60 min treatment period in oregano tea. E. coli O157:H7
appeared to be the most resistant pathogen followed by L. monocytogenes 4b, S. aureus and Y. enterocolitica,
respectively. The use of water extracts or hydrosol of oregano for the decontamination or disinfection in food
safety strategies should be evaluated in comparison with other natural antimicrobial spices.

Keywords: Antibacterial, oregano, pathogen.

Default fresh Oregano

So I guess the fresh oregano from my herb bed that I chop up & put on everything that I can is good for me!!!! My oregano has just been going wild & has taken over the one flower bed.

I really encourage everyone to grow a herb garden. They are very low maintenance and you can just stick the plants anywhere in a flower bed or a border... Or just pots on the patio, the benefits are worth the effort.

In the South Rosemary grows into a hardy bush. If we accidently get ice or a freeze it just acts like nothing happened to it.

Ear Infections

Quote:
For Ear Infections [all ages]:

Apply the oil directly on or near the outer ear. Do not put it into the ear. Nothing should be poured into the ear during an ear infection; do not drip the oil from a dropper directly into the ear. Be sure to place the oil in the outer ear by placing 2-3 drops on the finger and applying. Or saturate a cotton ball and place it at the entrance of the ear canal.

Essential oils-their antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and effect on intestinal cell viability.
Institute of Animal Physiology, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Soltesovej 4-6, 04001 Kosice, Slovakia.
Essential oils are known to possess antimicrobial activity against a wide spectrum of bacteria. The main objective of this study was to evaluate possible harmful effects of four commonly used essential oils and their major components on intestinal cells. Antimicrobial activity of selected plant extracts against enteroinvasive Escherichia coli was dose dependent. However, doses of essential oils with the ability to completely inhibit bacterial growth (0.05%) showed also relatively high cytotoxicity to intestinal-like cells cultured in vitro. Lower doses of essential oils (0.01%) had only partial antimicrobial activity and their damaging effect on Caco-2 cells was only modest. Cell death assessment based on morphological and viability staining followed by fluorescence microscopy showed that essential oils of cinnamon and clove and their major component eugenol had almost no cytotoxic effect at lower doses. Although essential oil of oregano and its component carvacrol slightly increased the incidence of apoptotic cell death, they showed extensive antimicrobial activity even at lower concentrations. Relatively high cytotoxicity was demonstrated by thyme oil, which increased both apoptotic and necrotic cell death incidence. In contrast, its component thymol showed no cytotoxic effect as well as greatly-reduced ability to inhibit visible growth of the chosen pathogen in the doses used. On the other hand, the addition of all essential oils and their components at lower doses, with the exception of thyme oil, to bacterial suspension significantly reduced the cytotoxic effect of E. coli on Caco-2 cells after 1h culture. In conclusion, it is possible to find appropriate doses of essential oils showing both antimicrobial activity and very low detrimental effect on intestinal cells.
