My 17 year old son also has very low cholesterol (103). His triglycerides are 40 (HDL 45; LDL 50). I have yet to find a doctor that is concerned about this but I also think it is a sign of malabsorption. Dr. Fasano's nurse told me he is not concerned because only about 20% of blood cholesterol comes from diet (I think that is what she said). I plan to follow-up on this at my son's physical this winter. At least I would like to have a liver function panel done along with other things that would measure malabsorption. Let me know if you can recommend any follow-up tests.

Thanks.

I definitely think low cholesterol is malabsorption. Mine was very low until I went GF and within a year it was up 30-40 pts.

Limpia,
My wish list for blood work for my son with very low cholesterol (who is not on a gluten free diet) includes Vitamins A, D, K, and E. These are listed on page 37 of Peter Green's book on Celiac Disease as being the fat soluble vitamins that are commonly malabsorbed in celiac disease. I would also request a liver function panel because cholesterol is manufactured by the liver. I would think it would also be important to check digestive enzymes to see if they are present in normal ranges.

This is just a start but I first have to find a doctor that will agree that the low cholesterol might not be a good thing.
