I looked at the lab tests that my new doc ordered, and found one I am not familiar with. I have looked it up, and tried to do some research. I know he suspects CD. It appears as though this may be a test for it: TISSUE TRANS.AB, IGA W/REFLEX...is someone here familiar with this. If so, has anyone been dx with CD using this test? I would appreciate anybody's personal experience with it. Thank you!

--the test for the IgA antibody to tranglutaminase, an antibody to a gluten-reaction enzyme that is often found in people with celiac and/or gluten sensitivity.

It is currently considered to be the most specific antibody for frank celiac, and it appears to be at least roughly correlated with the amount of damage to the small intestinal villi. However, it is not a perfect measure; some 20% of people who were found to have villous damage on biopsy did NOT have levels of this or other antibodies (i.e,, anti-gliadin IgA, IgG) beyond "normal" ranges. (There's some question as to what really constitutes a normal range, of course--it's been argued that those whose bodies do not react to gluten would not have ANY levels of antibody.)

Thank you glenntaj. I haven't had the test yet. I go for the blood draw on Thursday. I have the doc's orders, and saw that one on there, and did not recognize it. I tried to do some research on my own. I knew that he suspected CD because he said so. I told him that I did not want to be tested. Evidently, he thought better. And I am glad that he did. The more I have read about it, the more it does look like a possibility. I will post the result as soon as I get it. I am thinking right now that even if it is negative, I will try a gulten free diet. What have I got to loose? And, as you pointed out, there is a 20% error margin. I wonder why docs don't test for Celiac's when they do an EGD. I've had two already, and never had that done. Thank you again for the info.
