Colchicine can be very hard on you. It is a poison you know in high doses.

Are you on Allopurinol? (for uric acid gout)

Some gout attacks respond well to indomethacin. This is a pretty tough
NSAID and not to be used if you have ulcers or any stomach bleeding tho.

Gout attacks (uric acid) can follow illnesses. Any illness that raises white
cells, can lead to a gout attack when over. As the white cells are metabolized away they release purines, which overload the system.

I have elevated uric acid and did for at least several months before the gout came on. I cannot take NSAIDs or allopurinol because of my kidney issues.

My gout came after a few days of a cold and the days it was at it's worst were the days that my cold was worst, too. Oh, even if my foot hadn't hurt so badly I couldn't have walked much anyway.

That was 8 weeks ago, though. I would think it would be gone now except that I still have high uric acid (because of my kidneys).

Thanks, Jamietwo, that was an interesting link. More specific in some ways that some of the things I had read, so that was particularly nice.

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling so bad, Rachel. Are you on any other medications? I hope you get to see your doctor before Jan 17.

Cara, I hope your DH is feeling better. Have you figured out what caused the reaction?

Cherries...

Some research has shown cherries can help:

Hopefully they work better for others than they did for me. I drank cherry juice by the gallons and ate cherries till...well...

Another remedy is gin soaked raisins. Something about the gin - I don't remember any more.

The cherries can work. My sweet hubby had gout once, and I fed him cherries, having read about it somewhere or other. He claimed he could feel a huge difference. I just like to eat cherries! Although it does seem that my joints don't ache quite as bad when I've got cherries to eat.
I don't know about the gin soaked raisins, though! I never could abide gin, and wouldn't want to ruin the raisins! :D Does it have to be gin? I remember keeping a gallon jar of brandied fruit in the fridge, back when I could still garden and put up produce. As the different fruits matured, in they went. We kept eating out of it, and adding more fruit all summer long. It sure was good!
