Default Topamax Question

I have been on Topamax for about 5 months for headaches. Currently 50mg a day. I was wondering does anyone experience tingling in their face as a side effect or know if that is a side effect? I have heard it is a common in the hands and feet. But not sure about tingling in the face.

Also, is there anything that will help with that side effect. Thanks!

Tingling is normal, especially on the peripheral parts of your body, including the tip of the nose, the chin, the ears, around the mouth. Nothing has been shown to be helpful. It goes away once you are off topamax. Some people say it is an acceptable side effect if it works for the migraines.

Alex, I'd ask the doctor to test your bicarb status on the Topamax. This drug can cause acidosis and hence odd feelings.

Warning letters were sent to doctors to follow up for this serious side effect:

http://www.fda.gov/ICECI/Enforcement.../ucm146898.htm

Tingling on the head and face can be a sign of acidosis. (also can be from low calcium levels).

I had this s/e at 100 mgs, but not at 50 mgs. I drink lots of water and exercise fairly regularly. Don't know for sure, but I suspect lowering the dosage and these other two factors all combined made the difference. Hang in there...I have found Topamax to be the only effective thing w/ reference to cutting back on my migraines. The s/e's are kinda "tricky," so it requires lots of patience on your part and that of your physician.

Hi, I've taken Topamax for several years. I take 100 mg 2 x a day. I don't have any side affects. My sister can't understand how I can take so much of this. She can't even take 25mg. It may be something you have to work up to or something you just can't take. I hope you can get it figured out.

I , too,had similar side effects with Topamax. Those were bearable 4 me, but I had to go off it 4 a different side effect..........it was like I couldn't think straight. When I was talking there were many times when I would be talking and I wouldn't be able to find the right word that I wanted to use!

Once when I was hospitalized for a very bad episode I had a neuro resident who had to stop Topamax 4 the same reasons..........her friends in medical school nick-named it "Stupid-Max"!

I hope u find some way to eliminate the side effects especially if it is helping in your prevention routine! I know how difficult it can be to find a routine that works!
