Unhappy 27 days with this...

I have had a migraine for 27 days and it only goes down a lil bit with pain meds. Lights & sounds don't seem to bother me but sometimes smells do. I have really bad insomnia but I have been trying to rest more... I have been to the ER twice and to my doctor and she changed my depression pill to see if that works because my depression hasn't really gotten better. I don't know what to do & want to cry

Cool Smirk

Hey Shady XV,
Headaches of any sort are the quickest route to depression. My Cluster Headache attacks have been daily since Boxing Day so I know how it is. I cannot help you on migraines, the meds I take for Clusters are totally different but you are doing the right thing by getting your Dr to change your Depression meds.
They will take time to take full effect, though. Try to keep positive even though it's hard - you have the best medicine for Depression there - playing with your PitBulls. Playing with your dogs releases endorphins which are SO much better for you than meds. You can also come here for support across the Forums.

Dave.

Before Imitrex became available; I had been on Midrin. The doctor had given me monthly refills. I did not realize, at the time, about rebound pain. I would just get rid of migraine; then a short time later, back again. Some days I had taken as many as 6 or 7. My jaw even tightened.

Thankfully (before I was on the internet) my son had looked up the Midrin and lo and behold; explanation of the effects of rebound headaches. For quite some time I went off all Midrin and any aspirin. The pain was awful; but I had to get all this out of my system. Eventually when Imitrex came on the market, I used much more wisely. I have been fortunate, the Imitrex really has helped me.

Hopefully, you will soon get relief.

Hi ShadyXV,

I'm sorry to hear that you have had a headache for so many days. Years ago I used to get migraine headaches that would last for a couple of days then I started taking vitamin B12 1000 mcg. once a day and it really helped me out a lot and reduced the headaches. Years later I found out that I had epilepsy and that was the cause of some of my headaches.
Watch what you are eating I found out that eating to many carbs and starch foods caused more activity in the brain that would lead to both headaches and seizures for me. One thing that was really bad for me is anything with nutra sweet that causes more electrical activity in the brain. I just recently found out that if a person uses a cell phone to long (30 min.) even if they are just texting that is what can cause headaches as well as seizures for some people and that's do to the frequency the cell phone is on.
Keep track of the weather I still get headaches right before any bad weather headed my way and that's because the low pressure makes the air heavier which in turn messes with a persons hormones and that leads to headaches. Like I mentioned start taking vitamin B12 and I would get off the depression med because that can sometimes mess a person up even more. I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Sue

hi shadyxv

I do simpathiys (sorry for spelling ) its really horrible to be in so much pain for so long,
I have cervicogenic headachs for 7 weeks, horrific pain, stay in same position 24/7, not even able to lie down.
can they not do tests to find out why you have them or give you more powerfull pain killers?. or find out what triggers it, so you can avoid them. my sister has horrific migraines, shes in bed for days having to have injections, her triggers are orange, red wine chcholate and cheese. she was given ATENOLOL (ITS REALLY FOR HIGH BLOOD
PRESSURE BUT A LOW DOSE REALLY HELPED HER NOT TO HAVE THE MIGRAINES.
WERE IN THE UK, BUT IT COULD NOT HURT TO ENQUIRE ABOUT IT WHEN AT YOUR
DOCTORS AGAIN. HOPE THIS HELPS

Hi Shady XV,
I would feel like crying too if I had a migraine for 27 days. I hope you find some relief SOON. It's my understanding that a migraine lasting longer than 72 hours bumps you up to a different diagnosis with different treatment options. I know that IV DHE can break a stubborn headache and I'm sure there are other options out there that I don't know about. A doctor should be able to discuss these with you.

Is your headache bad enough to prevent you from working and completing daily tasks? If so, make sure your doctor knows this. If they won't listen, find another doctor who will. I learned the hard way that my primary care doctor is much more concerned with giving me good care than my neurologist ever was. The point is, keep speaking up for yourself till you find someone who understands what you're going through.

You might want to consider going to the ER at a university hospital and asking to see a headache specialist or neurologist.

I wish you the best of luck in quickly finding a treatment that works for you.
