Default Multiple daily headaches in base of skull/neck that last for a week

Hi everyone

I wonder if anyone can relate to or help with my symptoms?

-Multiple daily headaches lasting for a period of roughly 1 week - sometimes 2 weeks - they come and go throughout each day

-Intense throbbing, pressure, burning pain
-Base of skull feels swollen and tender
-Pain is in the base of my skull where it meets the neck
-Sometimes radiating to ears, throat (occasionally i can feel a related sensation in my nose)

-The pain lasts around 5-10 minutes each time
-They come and go roughly 10-20 times a day
-Come on quickly and escalate to maximum pain within 1 minute
-Wake me from my sleep roughly 4 times a night and in the morning

-Sometimes affects hearing - similar sensation to ear popping
-I feel dazed and I don't want to talk
-I can go for months without any symptoms

-Ibuprofen / paracetamol / ice help

Thank you in advance

Hm. Sounds similar to the migraines I suffer. Some of the symptoms are the same, like the pain at base of neck/behind head, the type of pain, pain spreading to other parts etc. Maybe it's a form of migraine?

Have you talked to a doctor about this?

Make an appointment to see a neurologist that specializes in headaches/migraines. Most can be found at headache clinics or a headache clinic inside of a hospital. You can find them listed in the Yellow Pages.

GOOD LUCK!

Hi ,

I managed to find a great doctor who is helping me a lot. I have started to take amytriptyline which she hopes will stop the pain cycle that my body is in. She thinks the headaches may be very severe tension type headaches and that my body is so used to reacting in the same way when i feel tension, the medication is meant to block the cycle. The headaches have become more manageable but havent gone away completely after 3 months of taking them.

The doctor also referred me to a physiotherapist and a neurologist so fingers crossed they give me some answers!

Do you have the same cycle of headaches as i described?

I forgot to say also I was told that the symptoms dont point to migrane because they are short and come and go, im sure there were some other symptoms that didnt match too.
