Default Mrs D, my very first rose campion bloom!!

It was there today after a very long wait of over a year since planting the seeds. It's the magenta bloom on the left of the pic.

Thumbs up

Good for you! Looks healthy too!

I put some in the corner city garden I adopted (very dry there and harsh conditions), and they are going to bloom this season too.

Yours looks nice with the coreopsis!

Clip off the spent flowers, after this first bloom, and you will get another round of flowers. Clip just below the seed pod, because the new ones arise close to the first on the tips of the bloom stem. If you leave the second bloom to go to seed you may get volunteers next season. If you do not want more in this location be sure to dead head in fall. Left on the stem the seed heads turn brown with a small opening at the top. If you want to save seed, clip these off and put in a ziploc baggie. Then you can sprinkle later in other areas if you want.
This plant is supposed to be biennial...die off after 2 seasons. Yet I have some now 5 yrs old. I dead head them in fall before they set much seed, so they do come back as a perennial that way.
This hybrid of the wildflower Silene Catch Fly... is semi-wild I believe, and very hardy. Good for tough spots in the garden!

I am trying another Lychnis cousin, called chalcedonia. The foliage is not silver and is a purple green. Flowers supposed to be more red and less magenta. So far mine are doing well, but I don't think they will bloom this season. But eventually I'll collect seeds from them too and offer them here as well. This plant is supposed to attract hummingbirds. I've seen our hummers come to our silver campions too.

Thanks for the photo! Yours looks great!

Default

I have them around the house in five or six places. I think I'll let them go to seed then I'll have them each year if they reseed themselves.
