I have been looking for a new vacuum for about 2 yrs and hit the stores again today. I took all the models I was considering for a test drive at the last store and decided on the Dyson DC07 Animal.
It was between $120 and $180 more than the competion. Why I chose it was... No filters to buy Easier to push Lighter than most Longer hose Dust cup is easier to empty It came with all the little accesories plus the turbine head, low floor tool and carpet cleaning stuff (a bottle of spray, powder and the brush to scrub it in with). My 15 yr old sharp died, so I couldn't do a comparison sweep. But I can tell this thing picked up more than the other one could have. I last swept a week ago, and the dyson picked up enough to fill the old vacuum's bag! I could normally sweep the whole house 5 times without picking up that much. Still, it's a brute to lug up the stairs. And using the wand is awkward, but when you have to that little turbine thing is aggresive and worth the hassel. The low floor attachment gets under furniture really nice. Dh is gonna blow a gasket when he sees how much this thing cost. Oh well. Wait till he sees how good the floors look! I was so not gonna get suckered into the dyson hype but I am sold.

BGB, I've had that Purple Animal for 4 years now and love it, love it!
Yes it is heavy to lug up stairs... I bought a Roomba for that one big room we have upstairs. But even though it is heavy, I can push it around in my carpet and it seems the slower I go the more "gunk" it pulls up. Our two cats are now outdoors, but when they were indoors it really worked great for catching all that hair. Enjoy your newest "Pet" .

I got a Dyson 1.5 years ago. It really does find all the dog hair. I used it one time after the housecleaners came. They use an Oreck and the amount of crud I got up with my dyson was unbelievable!

a plain old SEARS canister vacuum. It is powerful (new) and very flexible.
I like it and it didn't cost nearly what a Dyson does. My husband chose it from a rating in Consumer Reports. It is called the Kenmore Progressive. I find uprights less useful for us, since we have many corners and small spots-- I use the hose always. (SEARS got the high rating for pet hair, which we have plenty of). We always check out Consumer Reports...they have never failed us yet. My husband helps me with vacuuming now, so he gets to pick, as far as I am concerned! LOL He says ours was about $250...he had to rush out and get it because our old Eureka died while I was up North last summer. I think he did a great job! I am pleased, with it. (it is also much quieter too).

I, too, have a purple Animal Dyson. I love it. It is heavy, but I have very few carpets. I have a strong 11 year old to lug it up and down the stairs, too!
