I had a VP shunt fitted in 1993 after a subarrachnoid haemorrhage, and so far no revisions. Which is great.

BUT ... over the past 6 months or so I've had sore, tender areas along the track of the shunt tube, across my chest. Sometimes the sore patches are swollen, too.

First time this happened I was quietly panicking. My doctor sent me to see a lovely neurologist who didn't have a clue. Never heard about this before. Thought that it was probably local scarring that was getting inflamed. Just massage the areas, he said.

Well, the soreness went away.

And then it came back for a time. And again, and again.

There might be some connection with having infections like sore throats and sinusitis (which I get a lot).

Anyone had anything similar?

:grouphug:..Me too: at the moment, my shunt line in my neck is aching and feels swollen, I have checked the bulb at the back of my head and it is working ok, I guess it must be like you say, I also have a bit of a sore throat etc maybe the 'inflammation' from the throat/sinus affects the shunt also, cause it is aching.
Still if thats all we have to complain about I guess we are lucky hey!:winky:

welcome to Neurotalk Ruffwood.
sorry to hear you are having pain

i dont have Hydrocephalus but I do know that in our family our various ailments definitely get worse when we have cold or other additional illness happening so it sure wouldnt surprise me if inflammation is causing this for you.

hope you feel better soon

Hello Ruffwood and WELCOME to Neurotalk!

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing such pain..:(

I know little to nothing about hydrocephalus or shunts... if your shunt or part of it is near the base of your skull a sinus cold/headache---inflamation just might be pressing against it as the lower part of our sinus system is near the base of the skull.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

:)
Abbie
