Default shunt revision

Ive just had a shunt revision, after 20 symptom-free years. My condition is called hydrocephalus and the operation is a fairly invasive procedure. However I find that people tend to trivialise the illness/operation.I got this when I was 24 and in my first permanent teaching post so it totally wrecked my career;I have always subbed. In Northern Ireland this carries a great stigma.
This time round I am just amazed at the level of ignorance surrounding shunts.
