Unhappy VP shunt malfunction?

I am new to this forum. My son is 21 and was shunted at 10 months. He has only had 2 revisions so he has been very lucky. He has had a recurrent problem and we do not know if he is having a malfunction. Starting in January he had a terrible headache and threw up a few times after a few hours he felt better. Felt relatively good for 4 weeks and then he same thing happened early February and the again early March. He sometimes has a headache in the morning and it feels better as the day goes on. Last week he had a headache most of the day. He does not know if it was a shunt headache.
My question is can this be a sign of a malfunction? It comes and goes and then seems to be really bad once a month and then subsides. What do you think?

If he feels better as the day goes on... he could be under draining, i.e. if being upright helps him feel better (if he has an programmable shunt, it may need adjusting to a lower setting but he may not like the lower setting if it puts him too far down). Or he could have some mild intermittent problem, but that would hopefully be less dependent on position. Sounds like a great time for him to talk to his surgeon's office. If he feels better after sleeping with his head elevated, that might be just enough to compensate.
