Post-haermorrhagic hydrocephalus (which is the communicating type) is caused when the outlets for csf reabsorption are blocked or damaged by bleeding within the subarachnoid space (the space between the skull and pia matter layer of the meninges) or within the ventircles of the brain. Blood acts as an irritant to the meninges and damages them or leads them to stick together. This means they are no longer able to reabsorb csf, therefore causing hydro. My hydrocephalus, caused my meningitis is also communicating because meningitis has similar effects to a haemorrhage. The meninges are damaged by the infection, and can no longer perform their function of reabsorbing csf.
Does that make sense? Nat. |

Hey, Caz.
It means hydro that occurs as a result of bleeding in the brain (e.g. stroke, aneurysm, cerebral hemorrhage, intraventricular hemorrhage). LIZARD |

As I said in my post, I have this kind of hydro, but due to meningitis, not a haemorrhage.

My son had post hemorrhagic communicating hydrocephalus at birth as a result of his life support machine (ECMO) in which they heparinize the blood which inturn caused him to have subdural hematomas. He is 14 now still has the same shunt in place, although it has long since stopped working and he no longer needs it.

How did they diagnose this for you? I am still trying to unravel my constellation of symptoms and am having to do a lot of background work since my Neuro is very much out of ideas already. So any background you could give me about your journey to diagnosis would be really helpful- if for no other reason than to rule that out for me. Thanks. I was born at 25 weeks and I had a IVH, which caused my hydrocephalus. I've had a shunt since I was born and sixteen surgeries to date, I'm only twenty. I just found this community, now I have people to talk to who know what I'm going though...yay.
