Good luck to you. I went for my post-op appointment today, and, the peritoneal end of the shunt has come loose and is draining into a pocket (again). I go in at 1030 tomorrow for more surgery to revise it. I hope this is it.

I talked to my neurosurgeon's secretary today and she told me he is putting a new Left Ventricular shunt in. I have my old one in the right side so I guess I am going to have one in each side. One working and one not!

As long as one works that is all I care!

Actually my surgery is on May 5. It was supposed to be on Friday but they had no beds available! I think it will help! Should relieve all the pressure in my head!

When I had my LP Shunt put in, I told him I felt like I had some swelling in my stomach. He palpated it, and said he didn’t feel anything. The next day it started draining from the abdominal incision site. He acted like it was no big deal, but suggested we check it in the OR for placement. He still said he didn’t feel anything, but that the drainage was CSF. My satisfaction was that when he cut into me ( I know the OR Nurse) it gushed out all over him, and the OR. Maybe he will listen better in the future. Sorry for rambling on. Any advice those of you with a VP Shunt can pass along to me would be tremendously appreciated!!! :grouphug:

Ive had chiari since 2004. Ive had 8 sugeries now, im completely disgusted with my vp shunts they clog up about every 6 mons, or less I just had one replaced mar 26th 2009 had one month without a headache, now the headaches back, my guess is is its clogged again,am I the only one with this problem? do vp shunts screw up often for other people too?

Okay just an update!

It is now less than 14 hours until my scheduled surgery, provided of course they are on time! The past few days have not been too bad for me, some pressure but not too bad. The worst was on Sunday when I went out on a sunny day to cut my lawn. When I was done, only an hour, the pressure was huge in my head but subsided when I went and laid on the couch.

Am I scared? Yeah I am a bit. But I am no more scared than I have been for other surgeries that were all non shunt related! I have great friends and family who do a great job in keeping me laughing and I expect they will be doing that tomorrow when I go in to the OR too!

I will be just happy to get rid of the pressure and pain! If it clogs up, well it will anyhow! I will take it as it comes and continue to enjoy life! I figure the first one lasted 34 years with no problems. If I get 35 out of this one, YAHOO!
