I was reading on another post that the womans husband was being prescribed Tramadol for the of Neuropathy. My doctor has told me that there is little point prescribing anything for the pain because it was the nerves themself.
Is this true? Are painkillers worthless for this condition? Should I be going back to my Doc? I look forward to your answers. Quote:

Tramadol can be very useful for those with PN. If you visit our PN forum and put that drug into the search in the upper right, you'll find all the posts discussing it.

Hi ~ Nerve pain can be helped by anti-seizure drugs too such as neurontin or topamax. These meds help take care of the burning-type pain that you get with neuropathy.
You might ask your doctor about these meds, and see what he says. The Topamax worked miracles for me! The burning pain is gone! Best of luck & God bless. Hugs, Lee

i was on neurontin for about 2 years and it worked great in the beginning (04'-06') and slowly stopped helping. in the last 4 months ive tried topamax and treximet and they did nothing for me. same goes with tramadol and many pain meds, i dont know if its because ive been on them so long or just because everyone reacts differently.

Still having major issues with: anxiety, depression, memory short and long term, sleeping including insomnia and hypersomnia, severe headaches 10-15 days a month, severe neck tension and pain that can be easily agitated, comprehension, problems focusing, easily distracted, irritability, skewed judgement, constantly overwhelmed, mood swings, confusion, brain fog etc etc |

Hi, hemse:
What my U.S. pain management physician told me about narcotic painkillers (such as Tramadol, Tylenol #3, Tylenol #4, Vicodin, MSIR, Dilaudid, Actiq, Duragesic, etc.) is that they can be effective against neuropathic pain but for that, they need to be taken in a higher dose than if they were taken for other types of pain, such as nociceptive pain. |
