Default GlaxoSmithKline to plead Guilty: record $3 billion fraud settlement

from Physician's First Watch Newsletter July 3rd 2012
Quote:
GlaxoSmithKline will plead guilty and pay $3 billion "to resolve its criminal and civil liability arising from the company's unlawful promotion of certain prescription drugs [Paxil and Wellbutrin], its failure to report certain safety data [on Avandia]," and other matters, the Department of Justice announced Monday.

The department said the settlement was "the largest health care fraud settlement in U.S. history."

We all know (or believe) it happens, but it's rare (and nice) to see DOJ or any official authority actually admit it.

Thumbs up Yay!

I was happy to see those weasels take a hit, I knew they were promoting Advair for children and in light of the problems I've had with the steroid in it (same as Flovent) I thought it was cause for concern. They don't even know the consequences of long term inhaled steroid use and recent literature I see suggests that people with more intact lungs than COPD patients absorb more medication systemiclally. From what I see in the asthma forums at the very least Flovent causes a lot of behavior and emotional problems in children and IMO should not be used casually.

I think they've been fudging some of the post marketing SE data a bit myself. Like me, I think at least some people with SE have been Dxed with unrealated disorders possibly in part because of the way the SE in package inset are worded.
