I have sufferd terrible low back pain for years. In 2005 I was injured on the job. I was operateing a machine that you stand behind to finish concrete. The machine hit somthing and jerked out of my hands and hit me in the stomach nocking me to the ground. I had instint pain in my low back. I went thru many hours of therapy thru the years I had numbness in my leg and had a surgery to help that it did help a little but my back pain only got worse. I had 7 or 8 injections with no help. I had a triple spinal fusion 2 years ago s1 l3 and 4. For a few months before surgery I was bed ridden. I am no longer bed ridden but I am in constant pain, I take norco 10-325 1 pill five times a day. Has anyone had any success with none conventional treatments for pain. Such as acupunksure sorry about the spelling. or anything else that may help. desperate in Michigan.

I've had some success with myofascial trigger point therapy, TENS, diet, and adrenal hormone therapy. I've had some limited (little) success with physical therapy, biofeedback, and holistic medicine (but I encourage pain patients to give them an earnest try). I had no success whatsoever with chiropractic, shiatsu, reiki, or naturopathy. I haven't tried accupuncture yet (but I believe it can help some people with some kinds of pain). Those are all I can remember at the moment. IME, the success of alternative therapies depends on the source & type (nociceptive vs. neuropathic) of pain.

Does the dr say if the surgery corrected the structural issue/injury?
And if so does dr suggest pain is more from soft tissues and/or scar tissue? If soft tissue based pain and not a structural issue - Maybe low level laser? also called cold or soft laser. Hypnosis? There are also pain pumps and/or SCS that can be implanted and put the medicine or the electrical signal to the right location. our sub forum for those- http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum118.html What is your avg daily pain level?

I have had a lot of success using self hypnosis/guided imagery for initiating sleep and bringing down those pain spikes that seem to come out of nowhere. There are mornings when I just can't get out of bed until I have taken my meds and used self hypnosis. I hate to sound like a baby, but there are mornings when the meds wouldn't stand a chance of kicking in unless I removed myself from the situation and gave my body a chance to settle down. Best wishes in finding what works for you.
