Default Need opinions - trauma, nerve damage, medications

Hi all,

Any inputs will be greatly appreciated.
My husband got into a car accident and underwent surgery last week. Opthalmologist removed several foreign bodies around his eyes, these were glass and some tiny patches of car tint from the car's windshield. Thank God his eyeballs are safe and he can still see! His forehead (very very close to his eyes) bumped real hard on the steering wheel.

After surgery, these were the prescribed meds thru IV:
Tramadol for pain
Cefuroxime antibiotic for the wounds
Hydrocortisone (removed after 3 days)
Cerebrolysine for brain contusion or concussion?

Husband was doing well but 3 days after the surgery, he had very high fever (40.2 temperature), chills, he was really hysterical and delirious and when his fever reached 40.2, we thought he was going to die but he was able to fight the fever/convulsions off thank God. After 4 convulsions, I then noticed that an hour after the nurse gives the meds, the convulsions happen. I was kind of angry at his doctors because they did not notice that earlier. They were telling me he had Pneumonia and infection bec of the IV, but really, the convulsions were just because of the meds.

My question is, why did the meds have that effect on him? Could it be that the dose was too high or the preparation of the meds was incorrect?

Also, the main concern that I have, that is much more related to neuropathy is that, my husband's upper right side of his eyebrows up to the middle of the upper right head are numb, that is where most of the impact of the trauma is. The doctor said it was because of nerve damage. Other than that he can move all parts of his body, only concern is the numbness. Question is, can the nerve still regenerate? How long? When will the numbness be gone? I am planning to start him with the following meds since I am also taking these for my neuropathy:

AM
Jarrow Methyl B12 1000mcg (2x per day) and then increase to 5000mcg after a week
Doctor's Best Benfotiamine 300mg (1x per day)
Solgar Folate 800mg (1x per day)

PM with food
Jarrow BRight (1x per day)
Carlson Fish Oil 1000mg or 1tsp (1x per day)
Centrum Regular

Will these be enough? I also have Potassium, Magnesium, R ALA at home. What else am I missing?

Again, thank you for your inputs.

Well, Tramadol in high dose causes seizures in some people.
(also hallucinations)

Doctors can remain rather clueless about drugs. Sad but true.

The numbness may resolve with time. Peripheral nerves can be compressed with swelling and tissue damage. That can resolve fast or slow --more slowly if they have been severed, or more quickly if only compressed.

The Omega-3's in the fish or krill oil are really important. I think you have covered most of the bases so far.

He will just need some time. Tissue repair is helped with good protein in the diet and also zinc. So look on your Centrum to see if zinc is in there. The biotin in the Centrum will also be helpful for the skin to heal.

Thank you mrsD

We are still worried though on the foreign body (glass) that is left on the muscle under his right eyebrow. The doctor said it will have to stay there until 6 months when they can operate again..

How much mgs of Fish oil does he need?
Also the zinc and biotin?
I still have regular Centrum at home so I might as well give him that also. Should I buy separate zinc and biotin supplements also?

The Centrum will have the biotin in it too.

About 3 fish oil a day, or two of the new Krill oil type.

This will help with healing. People with head injuries/concussions may have internal damage and Omega-3s also help with brain injuries. They usually use higher doses for them... 5 or 6 fish oil in divided doses during the day and take with food.

If he takes any blood thinners, discuss the Omega-3's with his doctor for approval.

Centrum has folic acid in it - 400mcg

i let my husband take 800mg folic acid in the morning with B1 and B12

and then Jarrow B-Right in the afternoon which also has 400mcg in it. is it okay if he takes 1600mcg of folic acid per day?

this is the type of fish oil that we have at home:
http://www.carlsonlabs.com/p-236-ver...ge-flavor.aspx

would it be okay if takes this 3x per day at 1tsp per serving?

i am concerned about the timing of his supplements.

I think the folic acid is okay, as long as you use B12 with it.
There is some controversy about folic acid vs methylfolate now.
The theory is that folic acid may compete with the methylfolate at the blood brain barrier. So the B-right has methylfolate in it, and if you give extra, it might be best to stick to that form.
Folic acid is not active in the body and has to be activated to the methyl form.

The timing is not so important. The oils go best with food, and the B12 should be done on an empty stomach. Those are the only major issues to watch for.

Carlson's is good. We used it for our son for his ADHD supplementation.

I have found that taking my Krill oil at night, seems to work better for me than in the daytime. I seem to sleep better and have more dreaming. So taking some of the fish oil at night may work the same way. Krill does not reflux but the fish oil might, so taking it at supper and remaining upright after dinner is best.

any thoughts on the Nature Made Fish oil?

a question also, should B12 really be taken sublingually, or melted under the tongue? if not, what will happen? i've been taking them orally without chewing them

and follow up question also, how long before and after taking the b12 and b1 should i eat? or this is needed with b12 only?

which will be better, taking 1 5000mcg per day in the morning or 3 1000mcg per day, divided doses?

same question with b1, 1 300mg per day or 2 150mg divided doses?

thank you @mrsD!
