I had become aware of the alkaline acidic issue probably 10+ yrs ago and work to keep as alkaline as I know how to. I use fresh lemon squeeze in a lot of my drinks and foods and lately more Red Mill baking soda to cut more acid.
As this article reads, MOST eat acidic foods and thinking lately about the meds which are also acidic. So more fuel to the fire. After reading the article here, I am now adding a tsp or so of my super green powder which I use off and on. I make a morning drink of MSM and Low Sodium V8 and distilled water and lemon and a tad of baking soda and now the greens. We need to keep a balance but more alkaline overall. There are alkaline acidic food charts online and I believe I even posted this info a while back. http://bodyecology.com/articles/drug...ood_acidic.php I just believe in helping our bodies as much as we can without obsession about doing it. Right now I'm drinking my morning coffee and I know it's acidic but add a tad of baking soda and a squeeze of lemon and feel better about it now and know it's less acidic. To improving our health. |

Usually body pH is maintained within narrow limits by well-understood physiological processes.
Acidosis can occur - the information in this evidence-based site may be of interest to members; http://www.healthline.com/health/acidosis#Overview1

Why wold you add squeezed lemon to things if you are trying to avoid acidic foods? Lemons, like other citrus fruits, are highly acidic.

Neurochic, you are right in thinking that citrus fruits are acidic because they contain citric acid.
However, your body contains about 30-40 litres of fluids which, as I mentioned above, are kept close to pH 7.4 through well-understood physiology. A few mL of lemon juice (about 0.1% of your body fluids) will have a negligible effect on your body pH. The same quantitative reasoning applies to the allegedly "acidic" foods which most people eat in moderation, with no adverse health outcomes.

Once lemons and limes enter your body they turn alkaline in our bodies. You can find this info all over the net.
Here is a good color chart on alkaline acidic foods. http://www.acidalkalinediet.com/Alka...oods-Chart.htm |

Caroline, in the interests of continuing this discussion, I am very confused by what I have quoted from you. Citrus fruits, including lemons and limes, are acidic because they contain citric acid. Can you provide some links with evidence which supports your view that they "turn alkaline" (I am not sure that I understand what you mean by this) from "this info all over the net"?

Hey kiwi, anyone can do their own searches. Here is one long link on Lemons...
http://realfoodforlife.com/16-health...ine-powerfood/ Did you ever wonder why many restaurants add lemon to the table water. Years ago before I knew the value of lemons a fellow I worked with said he drank a large glass of warm water with lemon every morning when he got out of bed. That started off his day very good. |

I deal with an achy body. And I've just learned to live with it, take pain pills 4 times per day and thinking IF I changed my diet big time, concentrated mostly on the foods in the Green zones on the color chart, MAYBE my body would get less achy. I eat meats which are acidic. Cut out meats a lot for just a couple days and see how I feel. This link talks about a change in 3 days:
http://www.acidalkalinediet.com/alka...s#.VkA2mrerQb0 I've heard this years ago: We are what we eat. |

[QUOTE]TO this day, the British Navy requires ships to carry enough lemons so that every sailor can have one ounce of juice a day. This is where the English got their nickname Limeys.[\QUOTE] If anyone thinks our Flagship, H.M.S. Ocean, carries 108,000 lemons on a 3 month deployment they are deluded. Further, the derogatory term, Limey, came from the practice of English sailors being given LIME juice as limes were more accessible in our Carribean Colonies. Sloppy myths easily checked. What does that say about the credibility of the rest of the site? I read further and found the vast majority of medically qualified persons who speak out about acid/alkaline body through diet dismiss it unless - as with everything - it is taken to the extreme. The body is a well regulated machine which keeps tight tolerances to ensure healthy function DESPITE what most of us do to it these days. I acknowledge kiwi's Signature 'Knowledge Is Power', to the compilers of these sites I prefer 'A Little Learning Is A Dangerous Thing'. Dave.

The body makes its own citrate internally. That received from foods is a very tiny amount compared to the internal citrate metabolism.
Most acids consumed in food (vinegar, citrus etc) are neutralized by the bicarb in the pancreatic juices as they leave the stomach.
