Post re: Mobic

Well, after the Vioxx/Bextra debacle hit, there was a flurry of activity for Mobic.

Being new it was still untainted. BUT.....

Mobic is not really cox-2 specific, so there is no real advantage to it...i.e.
to protect the stomach. It is related to piroxicam which has a shady past (quite toxic).

Mobic does not offer any improvements for cardiovascular side effects.

There are options available to you. For example I have a friend/colleague, who has severe Rheumatoid arthritis and always, salsalate works best for her.
Brand name Disalcid. This is related to aspirin which for me has always worked. I used to use it enteric coated.

I have found a very surprising form of Aleve (naproxen) OTC. It is Liquigel form, very fast acting and one lasts me all day. I've been on various NSAIDs for years, for my arthritis. I'd suggest you get the Aleve OTC and try it and see for yourself. Naproxen has shown the lowest cardiovascular effects of all the NSAIDs. I am astounded about this product because the regular tablets don't work for me, so I switched to Ibuprofen. Now I am using the Aleve and not even every day anymore!

Of course I am the SAMe woman... that in the long run is highly effective and protective. We have a SAMe thread in Vitamin Forum. But it requires committment and $$.

But the bottom line is that for 3 weeks, you may not see horrible side effects.
That is really a short time, drug wise. (unless you are one of the uncommon ones allergic to piroxicam(Feldene).

Another thing I do is use high gauss magnets for pain. Brian on PN does too. ( sort of got him going on that years ago at OBT)
There are several threads there on that too. Only very high gauss ones however work.
example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/20-Neodymium-Str...QQcmdZViewItem

Prices for neodymium ones can be very high on the net. I've used them for years, and they really work for pain. This Ebay entry is one of the more reasonable ones I found. I can instruct you personally on how to use them.
You can contact me via PM.

There are studies out there comparing SAMe to Naproxen over a six week period. SAMe does not give fast results, but it gives improvement over time.
Long term use of NSAIDs is thought to decrease healing potential by blocking Cox-2 which has other functions besides inflammation...Cox-2 cytokines signal repair. So some studies show LONG TERM use is counter productive to healing.

There is also our friend---fish oil. The OmegaBrite product is very high in the EPA portion and has the most anti-inflammatory bang for the buck.

I am going to send you an email..watch for it...

BTW I am doing 1/hr-20min treatments on my old cat each night...for HER pain...and she loves IT..the magnet!

Default Naprosyn

Be careful relying on naprosyn. I have seen a few patients with very minimal renal dysfuntion get much more problematic renally after taking daily naprosyn. I usually have people switch off with another NSAID so the metabolite does not appreciably build up.

Lightbulb Thank you anasazi...

I only use Aleve 220mg every once in a while...not everyday or all day long.
I see a physician regularly and have renal panel done every 6mos.

I am not considered a renal risk still after many years using on and off NSAIDs.

I found SAMe superior to NSAIDs anyway, and only use NSAIDs before expected more than average physical activity (i.e. the gym).

I still have normal serum creatinine and no interactions with blood pressure at the low dose I use.

NSAIDs are one of the most frequently reported drugs for injury and death.

Some statistics:
http://www.drugwarfacts.org/causes.htm
http://www.postgradmed.com/issues/20...1/fennerty.htm
Both of these links give pretty grim statistics on injury potential from NSAIDs.

This is a site that lists FDA reports for Mobic:
http://patientsville.com/medication/...de_effects.htm

The numbers are not high, because Mobic is not a hugely commonly used drug. And it is not available OTC. It is not a "fast mover" by any means.

Here is the Naprosyn one by comparison:
http://patientsville.com/medication/...de_effects.htm

similar in type, only less #s reported. All NSAIDs affect kidney functions. In some people dramatically and others less so. BTW my neighbor had a near fatal bleed on Naprosyn and was in intensive care for 13 days. She used it heavily and long term. I use predominately SAMe and fish oil by comparison.

mrsd knows i'm a BIG fan of SAMe. unfortunalty due to finances i had to go off of it for a few months. cheri, remember how much pain i was having in my back? now i am teaching the beginner yogo classes! i do take more than the regular dose, but since i had some liver issues a few years ago, that is what my dr reccomended.

i know it helps my mood too. which also helps in my pain tolorence. (which i do have a very high one) but when even a tad bit of depression hits, it seems to make the pain even worse.

(mrsd...can i take 5htp for mood with the SAMe?)

thanks mrsD and yup....I was not happy seeing those potential side effects.

I think I am going to pursue the supplements and other natural methods first, as I am just not feeling comfortable about this med, even tho he just wanted it for short term to see if the swelling and pain were reduced. My son used to take samE when his OCD was so bad and I know it helped him lots....didnt know it was also good for this too. I would rather cut costs on other stuff and fit beneficial supps in the diet than risk getting a bunch of new ailments from a med anyday.

thanks for all the input

Well, I am glad your back is better, curious!

Considering how terrible MY xrays are, my doctor is amazed that I don't have that much pain either. I credit the SAMe for that.

Now that l-tryptophan is back, it is less expensive, and I think better to use.
I never liked 5-htp. I bought NOW brand tryptophan and use it in conjunction now with my light visor. I find that 500mg is very strong for me, so I only use it twice a week or so. This I only do when the days get short, however.
Without the visor I get stiff/sore, grumpy and take too many long naps.
With the visor...I am totally different.
Take the tryptophan before bedtime, on an empty stomach or with a little sweet (like a few gummie bears or gummi Life Savers)...this releases insulin which pushes competing amino acids into the muscles and lets tryptophan cross the blood brain barrier better. I find even low dose tryptophan very strong for me. Really makes me sleep. I don't know how you will react to it.

To make serotonin, you need tryptophan as precursor substrate and B6 as cofactor.
The SAMe donates the methyl group. So they all have specific separate jobs in the sequence.

Red face I just read the other thread....

Podiatrist? Don't expect them to know much about drugs.

Sue, I put the link for the Ebay magnets in that post.
There is a huge variance in price on Ebay and other net places
for magnets. You don't have to pay alot for them. Just choose thin ones
that say neodynium on them. Thick ones are hard to stick on with tape.
If you search magnets on PN forum there are posts there from Brian and me.

Thumbs up

I did also post this on the arthritis forum but again want to mention here how much the topical methyl salicylate in those Salonpas pain patches are helping me. So much so that I certainly dont feel the need to take the mobic at this time ....and also those salonpas patches are so much more economical than the other arthritis ones I saw, so very thankful for that info mrsD .

I am relieved to have found another option to the med for now. Along with the patches I am taking MSM/glucosamine and turmeric/curcumin
plus my omega 3 so hoping to keep the inflammation and pain controlled that way for as long as I can.

thanks again
Cheri
