Default Neurontin

Hi there (new member)

Does anyone know if neurontin is useful for occipital neuralgia?
I have just started taking it and when I took it years ago I could only take 300 mg per day due to side effects. The pain doc said that I have to take 900 mg per day to be effective for nerve pain. Has anyone found this drug helped at lower dosages?

If anyone has any suggestions for medications for severe nerve pain (my nerve pain is from occcipital neuralgia) I would appreciate any input.

Thank you. Nice to meet everyone.

Julie

HI
I take neurontin (Gabapentin) for nerve pain in my arms and hands. It works pretty well. Enough that I can use them anyway.

I also tried Nortriptilyne (which is an old antidepressant that is good for nerve pain) but could not continue as it gave me bad memory blanks and insomnia. It worked really well for the nerve pain tho.

Hi Julie,

I have Occipital Neuralgia, but I haven't tried Neurontin. I have tried a few other meds, but they all had bad side-effects for me, especially Topamax!
Amitriptyline helped a bit with the nerve pain, but I was sleepy all the ime.
The best treatment I have found is a nerve block, and it has worked well for me. I've had 2 nerve blocks and the last one has lasted almost 2 months so far. I never want to go back to the other meds!

Hi Jaime
I have had two nerve blocks at C2-C3 but they were done to determine if I was a candidate for radiographic neurectomy. They gave me complete pain relief but only for about 8-10 hours. No lasting effect. I am anticipating that the lesions they are going to creat (the burning of the nerve) will be very effective considering the anesthetic diagnostic injections were completely successful. The problem is waiting for at least another 6 months to 3 years for the procedure here in Canada. The pain is unbearable at this point so I am now 2 days on Neurontin, A little dizzy but only at 300 mg per day so far.
Thanks for your input.
Maybe we could email as you have occ. neuralgia as well and I've never had the opportunity to chat with anyone that has this condition.
Can you PM on this site?
Thanks
Julie

myoclonus is a disorder like very mild epilepsy... it is a movement disorder that where muscles involutarily jerk..
