I am sorry I can't search for interactions for you right now. But I will during the weekend(I am off to work)...
But... INH does deplete B6 significantly, and most physicians have their patients use B6 supplements. It also depletes B3 (niacin) and Vit D. This site gives more information: http://www.truestarhealth.com/Notes/1404000.html Also Depakote depletes carnitine, so you should have a serum carnitine run periodically. You can also supplement that yourself. Depakote also depletes folic acid...but you need physician supervision when replacing that since folic acid inhibits some anti-seizure effects that Depakote has. http://www.medicinenet.com/isoniazid_inh/article.htm Check this website out in the meantime. INH does cause liver damage in some people, and so does Depakote. So monitoring functions would be prudent. Neurontin is not metabolized in the body..it is excreted whole in the urine. Hence it has few drug interactions.

I just used the drug interaction checker at Medscape.
I typed in Depakote, Neurontin, Ibuprofin, Naproxen, Isoniazid (INH) and it said "no interactions found". Here is the link to the interaction checker http://www.medscape.com/druginfo/dru...ugid=&drugname= You have to sign up as a member of Medscape to use it, but the sign-up is free and I have never gotten any spam from them for signing up and becoming a member. Hope that helps, Liz

thanks!! actually I was given the supplement for B6 and Vit D. The reason I asked in relation to Depakote, is because I used to be on INH for 9 months (inactive TB), As soon as I started on INH I became more ill than usual, and as soon as I was done with it, I started to feel better - of course this is all relative. My sxs are up and down anyway.
And I'm taking on the Depakote with levocarnitin since my ammonia level was high (due to Depakote). I take Depakote for headaches. It works very well, so we decided to deal with side effects and keep on it. And I had liver function test every month or two (and ammonia level) while I was on INH. Because as you said, they both could cause liver damage. At the same time, I was also (and still) take Ibuprofen and Tylenol. usually I rotate between them or taking them together when the pain is too much, or taking both in small doses to minimize side effects. I already developed mild NSAID induced gastric ulcers. But i thought my liver is more important, so I decided to switch completely to Ibuprofen, (with prilosec) and only take Tylenol when I simply could not stand the pain. The thing, though.. my neurologist thinks I don't need the liver function test anymore. I was a bit worried but I knew I could trust him if something happens. And yes.. Actually Neurontin was the first drug that they put me on, and the dx they gave me was migraine. The name Gabapentin is kind of misleading, don't you think? the actual structure of the two (GABA) is very different, stereochemistrily speaking. And if they are not metabolized, how could it do the work?? in fact they found its antiseizure effect by chance. |

Here is the result of a search I did for Depakote + INH:
Quote:
This is a very good drug to drug checker: http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/Interac...,4109,,00.html Neurotin clearance does depend on good kidney functions. And chronic use of NSAIDs can affect the kidney, negatively. This is a really complete very useful discussion of NSAIDs and their actions: http://arthritis.about.com/cs/nsaids...tsofnsaids.htm So while there are no "papers" on the interactions with Depakote, there are physiological effects when those drugs are combined. And same for Neurontin.

thanks..
yeah that's what i got too.. 9 months on INH, got sick on it, but didn't care much to do my homework. I just happened to study for my coursework when I read about the interaction between INH and valproic acid. I haven't had a hand on the original paper, though. I just wonder how people who take them both feel. When i was on them I didn't get new sxs, just got the same sxs but worse. After I finished with the INH and my vision suddenly improved, I asked my neuro-ophtalmologist if it's due to INH, and he said that can't be. the damage to the optic nerve dur to INH is irreversible. And plus, my neuro sxs are up and down all the time anyway. now i'm off INH, but welcome Cymbalta. And I have a bad feeling about this. oh, well... thanks! |

>>Neurotin clearance does depend on good kidney functions.
hmm.. i forgot about it. it'll depend on the clearance of the rest of the drugs, though.. (to be at risk, I mean). >>And chronic use of NSAIDs can affect the kidney, negatively. what do you mean "negatively"? and thanks for the links! I'll do my homework soon. But here's some references I have: Depakote and naproxen (or ibuprofen): in vitro studies show that naproxen could displace valproic acid from its plasma protein binding site, thus increase the free conc. of valproic acid (Dasgulta abd Volk 1996) and as we talked about, INH does increase depakote plasma concentration resulting in clinically significant intoxication (Jonville et al., 1991) one day I hope I'll do my homework properly.. |
