Talking recently diagnosed with Tourettes

My nine year old son Jacob, was diagnosed with TS. It came on fast and furious. Right now we are just starting with trying to find a drug that will help him, right now he's on Keppra, we just increased it to 3 times per day 2.5 ml in morning and lunch and 1.5 in evening. I'm not even sure if it's working or not. My son has complex vocal ticks (very loud) What seems even worse is his behavior at school, especially in the afternoon at school during science and math, he talks and talks and jokes around while the teacher is trying to teach a lesson. He is very disruptive in class. He never used to behave this way. I'm wondering is it the TS, I know ADHD is common with it. I'm not sure his behavior is ADHD. He still does well in school. Could his behavior be a reaction from the Keppra? Has anyone had a similar experience?

hi Lori and welcome to NT

I moved your post off the sticky so it could get the attentionit needs here.

so sorry to hear what your son is going thru. Mine is now 18yo and also has TS

I know nothing of keppra but when my son was on a variety of meds for TS he had side effects that worsened his OCD, moods, behaviors etc

someone with more knowledge on the med will hopefully be along shortly to give you more info

all the best
Cheri

Lightbulb I can imagine... all this at once suddenly....

I have two observations...

Fast onset of TS may reflect PANDAs... which is an autoimmune reaction to the Strep bacteria. So I would ask the doctor to test for this.

And Keppra causes Keppra "rage" in some people.
You can Google this... but I'd really suspect the drug.
It can vary from being hyper and irritable to actual aggression.

I think you need a good visit to the doctor. But look up the Keppra rage first so
you are informed.
