Question Has anyone taken Desipramine?

I have had sensory PN for many years. The doctors have not found a reason that I have it. I am not a diabetic. My father had CIDP and maybe I inherited neuropathy. It has not gotten better. For years it stayed below the ankles, but has now progressed to my legs, hands and arms. I've had carpal tunnel surgery, but four fingers are numb on the right hand and it is starting in my left hand fingers. I'm so confused. I have had stomach discomfort for several months. The gastroenologist has run every test he can, but thinks it has to do with the neuropathy. The scary part was that I had a bowel movement in the night without knowing it. Over the years I have tried many medications that either made my head a sponge, did nothing after awhile, or as with Lyrica, put 15 pounds on me in 6 weeks. Now I try to overlook the pain, burning, feet and finger numbness and not take anything, except at night when I take Ambien CR to help me sleep thru all of this. I also have uncontrolled high blood pressure that they can't find a medicine to bring it down. My general doctor was a holistic MD which tried to help with the natural route. My gastro. doc wants me to take the Desipramine. The neurologist is no help except to run tests. Has anyone had all of this happen to them with neuropathy?

Hi Gerrie. Welcome to Neurotalk.

While I have not taken that medication, nor do I have PN, I have MS with associated neuropathy.

We have a terrific PN forum here with some very helpful people and links that I hope you check out at http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum20.html

There is lots of very good information and maybe someone in that forum could better answer your question.

Neuropathy is something that a lot of people with many different diseases deal with, especially autoimmunue diseases/disorders.

I hope you can find some answers and comfort!

I take this medication in an effort to prevent migraines.
I was originally suppose to take a similar med called Elavil. I didn't want to take it because I had heard it often causes weight gain. The Dr. theorized that Desipramine might cause less weight gain, but work in the same way. I gained about 3 or 4 pounds after take Desipramine. I also got slight constipation and dry mouth. Nothing drastic. Drinking a little extra water and being careful with my diet has been helpful.
