If I may pick some of your brains, the last 3 times Deb(my wife) has taken antibiotics she has had issues, first time we didn't realize it till now she had cramps and BM issues felt horrid, second time she ended up in hospital, due to no potassium in her system, now this time its been just a few days on them and she is doing horrible, I am going to call the GP, in a little bit, but was wondering what what the product that is out there at stores, that helps with good biotics? I know I saw it in a thread a while back but can not remember what it was or in what form it came in, was it a milk like product or a yogurt type product, going out in a WEE bit to get some potassium pills for her, just wish I keep thinking

" Kieper" or something like that was the name

now if I may ask something else, this is appearing to be a pattern here, so do I keep her or what lol I am just kidding

has anyone heard of someone reacting so strongly to antibiotics? like i said going to call doc in about an hour, just getting worried about her, my paternal gut says something else is amidst here

They're called probiotics and your pharmacist should be able to recommend a good one.

I hope she's on the mend real soon.

A fast response to antibiotics like this, implies to me she was
already damaged from previous treatments.

People like your wife who are so reactive to drugs, should be eating a quality yogurt daily... I prefer Stonyfield because they have the most in each serving.

There are many good probiotics, the ones sold in stores on the shelf are typically not as good as you can get online.

The more names on the label, the better. Plain old acidiphilous is not adequate for severe diarrhea.

One thing that does work sometimes is Metamucil. This bulk laxative acts like a sponge to absorb toxins from bad bacteria that cause the diarrhea.

Your wife should see a doctor ASAP because this might be a C.difficle infection, which is hard to treat, and if ignored can damage the colon severely (and maybe permanently).

Pills you can buy only have 99 mg of potassium in them. They are basically useless.
V8 juice has 600mg in it.

Some people mash up bananas and apple sauce (pectin) to help with diarrhea. The bananas have about 400mg of potassium.

Gatorade is also useless-- it has 30mg in each 8oz.

I hope the doctor does SOMETHING for your wife. Some are clueless about this subject.

Using any probiotic will take time. The result is not instanteous.

There are drugs to use, but if you stop her up, then the toxins may damage the lining of the bowel.

Some different antibiotics are used, and one~~ Vancocin is very expensive.

I'd start with Metamucil now.. it can work in a day or two.

I personally think your wife should be eating a probiotic containing food every day from now on
forever.

Probiotics just about sent Jim over the edge. I bought some and within an hour of taking it he was dry heaving. It could have been the brand we bought but I think there are just some people who are so sensitive to certain meds that there are no answers. Jim had a major reaction to Macrobid once but now he's fine. He has to make sure he drinks milk or eats something before each dose or he'll be bent over. I am that way with Flagyl or Codeine.

I think you should call the doctor or pharmacist. While stomach issues are common with many, she ended up in the hospital last time and we don't want that to happen again. Jim's doctor tells us to eat plain yogurt with acidiphilous. That may be an option for her if she can hold it down.

A really good yogurt is called FAGE. It's a greek yogurt, it doesn't look like the other yogurts. And it doesn' taste like the other yogurts either.

I use the 0 percentage. But they have 2 percent and 1 percent. My physicians at Cornell told me to EAT FAGE YOGURT.

hated it the first few times, but now I love it.

I guess my taste buds got used to it.

But IT'S HEALTHY YOGURT.

Ask her doc about it.

Macrobid is very hard on the stomach. (even though it was reformulated from Macrodantin). There should always be "Take with Food or Milk) on your RX bottle for this drug.
However, it causes less dysbiosis of the colon, unlike many other antibiotics.

Thank you everyone Doc called said to get some OTC pro-biotics, and I also got her some of the name brand yogurt with the pro-biotics in it, so far so good, he said if it gets real bad get into ER.

again thank you all, I sensed so did Deb that the original trouble has yet to go away, and is causing some of this, she is going to see how she feels b4 we rush to ER, Our ER bites, upstairs is fine downstairs leaves so much to be desired

Probiotics that are NOT refrigerated, are less good than those
in the refrigerators in health food stores.

Read your labels and pick one with at least FOUR separate names on them.

Stonyfield yogurt has 6 cultures compared to 3 or 4 in other yogurts.

Probiotics will not work right away.
If the toxins are being released by bad bacteria that have established overgrowth due to the antibiotics, it can take days/weeks.

I really suggest you try the Metamucil to absorb those toxins.
It will work much faster, while she also consumes the probiotics. Applesauce is also good since the pectin functions the same way, but in a milder fashion.
