Question Bactrim DS Allergy?

Hi Everybody,

I'm on my second day of Bactrim DS 800 mg twice a day.

I have muscle aches and headache like the flu. Also, there's a rash on my legs and stomach. I don't have a fever but I feel very uncomfortable.

Does that sound like an allergy? I had to call the office and call off work for the morning. I'm taking this for a UTI.

It sure does sound like an allergy to me Wiz.

Are you allergic to Penicillin perhaps? I ask, because often people who are allergic to the penicillins are often allergic to the sulphas as well.

Here's a list of the side effects of Sulphas (and Bactrim is a Sulpha drug).

More common side effects may include:

* Hives
* lack or loss of appetite
* nausea
* skin rash
* vomiting

Less common or rare side effects may include:

* abdominal pain
* allergic reactions
* anemia
* chills
* convulsions
* depression
* diarrhea
* eye irritation
* fatigue
* fever
* hallucinations
* headache
* hepatitis
* inability to fall or stay asleep
* inability to urinate
* increased urination
* inflammation of heart muscle
* inflammation of the mouth and/or tongue
* itching, joint pain
* kidney failure
* lack of feeling or concern
* lack of muscle coordination
* loss of appetite
* low blood sugar
* meningitis (inflammation of the brain or spinal cord)
* muscle pain
* nausea
* nervousness
* red
* raised rash
* redness and swelling of the tongue
* ringing in the ears
* scaling of dead skin due to inflammation
* sensitivity to light
* severe skin welts or swelling
* skin eruptions
* skin peeling
* vertigo
* weakness
* yellowing of eyes and skin

The rash worries me, and my advice would be to stop taking the Bactrim and contact your doctor. It sounds like you may be allergic to this medication.

Exclamation allergies with sulfa

can be different....hives are not as common.

The rash comes instead. Stop the drug immediately and drink lots of water and take Benadryl (not Claritin )

If you continue with it, it can lead to nerve damage or other
more serious things.
If it does not clear up-- you might need a Medrol Dospak.

Sulfonamide allergies are very serious and toxic.

Report to the doctor, ASAP, since you need supervision and a replacement drug.

Good luck!

Hey Wiz~ Anne and mrsD gave you some excellent advice. I have a penicillin allergy and remember having a rash on my torso and arms. DD has an allergy to sulfur and when she took it, her students told her she had polka dots. She called me and I told her to get to the Dr; she went to the ER and they gave her an inj of something. *it's been a while, so can't remember what it was*

Please see your Dr. Feel better bud!!!!

Thanks everybody,

Wow, I think it is an allergic reaction then. I had the rash, muscle aches, headache and now chills this morning. I called the doctor so they're supposed to call back with soon. I took four pills, I hope I didn't do any damage. The last one was 7pm last night. I'll take some benadryl with my pills this morning.

Arrow Bactrim

A number of years ago I was prescribed Bactrim. I took one and then a half of one. I felt funny like sick in my head or heavy. I called the pharmacist and she told me to absolutely not take anymore of those pills. I suspect it would have turned out bad. It is something I will never take again.

I am not allergic to penicillan though.
