Default prednisone!?? long term use, at low doses???

Just curious if anyone here has taken prednisone like 2mg daily for any long term help?? I have taken taper down oral prednisone starting at 40mg and tapering down to 2mg..then off few times for MS like sxs? not dxed

But one dr mentioned idea of staying on it 2mg daily after the taper down, and see if helps. REason asking, is been on taper downs twice now since Jan 1st, and now that off once again, after two days, feeling right side having problems ....so thinking of idea of 2mg dose daily, trying to read all I can on the medicine, but wanted opinions of other people. thanks for help, sarah

Lightbulb long term use...

Long term low dose is sometimes used.

Long term use of steroids however deplete nutrients.

Calcium
Magnesium
Vit D
potassium
selenium
zinc
folic acid
Vit C

All can be affected. The first 3 listed lead to bone loss.
Potassium leads to weakness and fatigue.
Low zinc and selenium prevent conversion of T4 in the tissues to active T3, so thyroid responses may dull.
Low zinc, folic acid and Vit c may lead to acne.

Lightbulb

I you have to do it... then you do it.

But because of osteoporosis risk, attention to the nutrients is
important.

I would do some nutrients, carefully..not high doses for most.
The calcium and Vit D would need the most attention.

Over time, the zinc would be important.
For the rest a multi may be enough.

You need to eat foods high in potassium. V8 juice, cantaloupe, bananas etc.

I know this question is from a couple of months ago but I just wanted to let the first questioner know that I've been on varying doses of prednisone for about 20 years and am now on 5 mg. daily permanently. You just have to watch out for infections because of the prednisone suppressing the immune system. You'll be more susceptible to infection. If I get an infection started, I just taper down by one mg. a week for a week or two and then go back up. Maybe this will help others who are wanting to know, too.

My peripheral neuropathy is genetic and of an inflammatory nature and that's why I take it. It caused the numbness in my legs to recede clear down to my ankles and I quit falling so easily.

TY griz and J...

I have not been on any since the taper down dose in Feb and also Had some in January... but right now on neurontin and Baclofen. But still thinking of taking it on daily basis as the one dr mentioned. I know though the neuro said, not a drug to be on long term..and also that not to have it within certain amount of time before MRI. I guess can affect results! not sure on that.. but hugs, sarah

I am wondering about taking it for my chronic back pain.

Do you have the "moon face" that so many doctors say result from taking prednisone every day, all year long?

Or is the dose low enough to help without affecting you negatively.

When I took prednisone recently for poison oak, the side effect was I had no back pain what so ever. I really thought I had died and gone to heaven. So I a now thinking of a lower dose that I would take daily, but am concerned about long term side effects?

And am wondering if 5 mg or 2 mg would be low enough to avoid the side effects but high enough to keep the pain at bay.
