It is 6.7

Background

Has BPH and takes Flomax 0.4 mg each day

Dec. 2004 4.7

May 2005 4.2

Dec 2005 3.7

Oct. 2006 5.5

Sept. 2007 4.3

Mar. 2008 4.8

Started testosterone undecanoate (Andriol) Nov. 2008 80mg twice a day for 2 weeks and then 40mg once a day

Jan. 2009 5.3

Stopped Andriol

Apr. 2009 5.0 Started Andriol 40mg every other day


Aug. 2009 6.7

Doctor said to go off the Andriol again and retest in 6 weeks

Does this sound reasonable?

About 6 years ago, my results showed the same evolution as your husband's with two exceptions: I wasn't taking Andriol and my last result was 7.1.
Another PSA dosage was made to determine the amount of "free" PSA as the usual test results only give total PSA.
The ratio free PSA/total PSA gives an additional indication: over 0.25, the risk of prostate cancer is very low whereas below 0.12, the risk might be significant and should be further investigated, by a biopsy for instance to check for the presence of cancereous cells.
That was my case, I underwent surgery and everything is fine since then!
I'm now 70…

He has been off the Andriol since Aug 2009

Hi Alexann,
I would guess that the free PSA is at 0.249, if it is the case, beeing close to 0.25 and with a normal DRE, there is nothing to be afraid about, just quitely wait for the next appointment.

Thanks for getting back to us.

Oh I do hope you are right, I am trying to read as much stuff as I can...It is hard to keep it all straight and its confusing too.

PSA 6.3 and the other PSA number is 1.57

We are in the midst of retiring from farming and going to have a farm auction sale on the 26th of this month. We have been working hard almost everyday sorting stuff and getting the machinery ready. The farm has been in the family for almost 75 yrs, so there is alot of stuff.

We changed the urologist appt. to the 30th, so we will get the sale behind us and then see what he thinks.

The urologist that he had been going to retired a bit over a yr. ago, so this will be a new one. We think it will be good to see him see what he is like.

Nancy, that's what I thought: free PSA divided by total PSA =1.57/6.3=0.249...

Hi Maurice:

The sale went fine and we are glad to have the work behind us. The farm real estate deal closes the end of this month so it is almost over.

He went to the urologist and he thought his psa numbers hadn't changed that much over the last 6 yrs.

He has put him on Avodart and he is to see him in 6 months.

What do you think of it?
