Default Report: Task Force to Recommend Against PSA Test (HealthDay) (Yahoo)

HealthDay - THURSDAY, Oct. 6 (HealthDay News) -- The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is preparing to recommend that men no longer get screened for prostate cancer by undergoing prostate specific antigen -- or PSA -- testing, CNN reported Thursday evening, citing a "source privy to the task force deliberations."

Mad

From the cited article:

Quote:
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. It's the second leading cause of cancer death in men, behind only lung cancer.

The cancer society estimates that there are approximately 240,890 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed each year, and about 34,000 men die from the disease annually.
....
But Dr. Kenneth Lin, senior author of the paper due to be released Monday, said he believes PSA testing does more harm than good, the news network reported.

"Maybe you should get tested if you have this horrible family history where everyone gets prostate cancer before the age of 50. But for most men, testing is harmful," he said.
What the fudge How can they say something like that? I don't know of anyone who would jump in and start cutting without further testing if such surgery....

....can often leave a patient impotent or incontinent.
There may still be other treatment options available, and patients have a right to full discosure to make these decisions with the help/guidance of their own physicians whom they trust.

Sounds to me like just another case of medicine by politics instead of science.

There is 3 generations of family history for prostate cancer, so I shall continue to screen annually.
