Default Has anyone had a port implanted?

I've had so many blood draws, IVs and infusions, that my veins have become scarred and they roll, making finding a vein very difficult. The RN who gave me my IV SM this week mentioned thinking about having a port inserted.

She said they put it just under the skin below the collarbone on either side, making an entry for all necessary blood work, etc.

Does anyone have a port? What kinds of problems go along with one? Do you recommend a port?

Thanks!

I had one while doing chemo. Mind you this was YEARS ago, and I hope they have improved since. it was wonderful, in that I no longer had to worry about access, but I was so skinny that I could feel that stupid thing in my neck. it freaked me out, and when I got the chance I had it removed. I am told that my being so skinny contributed to it, and that things have improved greatly since then.

I hope you are able to find a more comfortable way to get your meds. mine was a blessing and a curse.

I have one put in for similar reasons. I am skinny, and requested a "slimport." It is no thicking than a bottle cap and has caused me zero problems for 8 years.

Good luck.

I don't have one fitted, but as a nurse I accessed many ports for drawing blood or giving drugs.

From my point of view they were wonderful and most of the patients liked them as well, as once fitted, they were usually trouble free.

Dej, I can imagine how that felt to you. Like a sore tooth you can't help but poke at with your tongue. I'm way far from skinny, though. That part shouldn't be a problem.

That is wonderful news, Koala. I have a feeling a port is in my very near future. It would be so nice to just get stuck once. Thanks!
